A 7.5-acre site near the Jefferson Memorial, this memorial depicts the 12 pivotal years of Franklin Delano Roosevelt's presidency through a series of four outdoor gallery rooms. The rooms feature ten bronze sculptures depicting President Roosevelt, Eleanor Roosevelt and events from the Great Depression and World War II. The park-like setting includes waterfalls and quiet pools amidst a meandering wall of reddish Dakota granite, where Roosevelt's inspiring words are carved. It is the first memorial in Washington purposely designed to be totally wheelchair accessible. Open daily except Christmas. Free. Park ranger in attendance 8 a.m. - midnight. Visiting the FDR (Franklin Delano Roosevelt - the guy from Pearl Habor) Memmorial is not only very informative but a very pleasant place to be in. The whole memmorial is made out of red marble with FDR's quotes lining the pasages. There are 4 individual "rooms" each representing each of his terms in office. The fountains are a great place to chill out on a hot dc summer day. The whole memmorial is made disabled friendly which isint particularly suprising because FDR himself was cripled due to Polio. by apbeaches Dedicated on May 2, 1997, the monument, spread over 7.5 acres, traces 12 years of the history of the United States through a sequence of four outdoor rooms, one for each of FDR's terms of office. Sculptures inspired by photographs depict the 32nd president alongside his dog Fala. Other sculptures depict scenes from the Great Depression, such as listening to a fireside chat on the radio and waiting in a bread line. A bronze statue of First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt standing before the United Nations emblem honors her dedication to the UN. by smschley I consider Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR) to be one of the three greatest presidents in US history. Pulling us through the Great Depression was a monumental task. FDR commented that he saw one-third of the nation “ill-housed, ill-clad, and ill-nourished.” Faced with the task of lifting the country out of a crippling depression, FDR traveled the nation speaking to farmers who had lost all their worldly possessions, meeting with relief organizations over-burdened by the demands of those in need, and addressing the fears of people struggling to survive. While he had little in common with these people, what they saw was a man who felt their pain and who exhibited sympathy, understanding, and reassurance. This was then followed by WWII which again questioned whether we would be able to continue as a nation. FDR again let this country through those difficult time till the end was almost at hand. Unfortunately he, like Moses, was not going to see the promised land. On April 12, 1945, only a few weeks since being sworn in as the President of The United States for a unprecedented fourth term, the President was stricken with a cerebral hemorrhage and died while sitting for a portrait in Warm Springs, Georgia. The Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial is one of the most expansive memorials in the nation. Yet, its shade trees, waterfalls, statuary, and quiet alcoves create the feeling of a secluded garden rather than an imposing structure. The memorial is divided into four outdoor galleries, or rooms, one for each of FDR’s terms in office. The rooms are defined by walls of red South Dakota granite and by ornamental plantings; quotations from FDR are carved into the granite. Water cascades and quiet pools are present throughout. Each room conveys in its own way the spirit of this great man. by LuvMyBoxerKids One of the most emotional and spritual memorials in the city. My favorite one, and is a jewel that is sometimes missed by the public because it sits off of the beaten path. It is made up of four outdoor "rooms" that each tell a story about his four terms as our most beloved President. There is also a statue of Eleanor Roosevelt in the memorial and is the first Presidential Memorial to also honor the first lady. Open 8 am to midnight 364 days a year. Closed only on Christmas December 25. Free to the public. Statue of Roosevelt and dog by mht_in_la Roosevelt Memorial is one of the newest addtions to Washington DC (I think in the 90's). And you can tell its design concept is very different from other memorials or monuments. First of all, it's low and continuous with several waterfalls and public art works, while other memorials/monuments are big, tall, and grand. Second, the memorial also included a statue of Eleanor, Roosevelt's wife, which is unseen in other memorials. Finally, the memorial does not try to hide the fact that Roosevelt was on wheelchair. From architectural viewpoint I think I am a little old fashioned and prefer the biggies like Lincoln or Jefferson Memorial. But Roosevelt Memorial is definitely friendly to visitors; you see kids playing around the waterfalls and sitting on the lap of Roosevelt's statue. Leave a Comment
