The Lincoln Memorial at dusk. by MDH This giant memorial dedicated to the embattled 16th American president is made like a giant Greco-Roman temple, complete with white marble, giant Doric columns, and a statue of the President inside, sitting in a chair in Zeus form, staring out into the National Mall. The memorial to the President was made at the beginning of the 20th century. Its 36 columns represent the 36 states within the American union at the time of his tenure during the Civil War in the 1860s, when 600,000 Americans lost their lives (and remains the most costly war in U.S. history). Inside the memorial are the words of the Gettysburg Address, the Second Inaguration speech (one of the most famous after FDR's 1933 inaguration) and murals depicting an angel freeing a slave from bondage, as well as the symbols of the North and South becoming one again. The memorial's emphasis on healing, democracy, and strength through a time of crisis has been the scene of demonstrations and rallies since its construction. In 1939, Marian Anderson, an African-American opera singer was denied to sing at the Daughters of the American Revolution-owned Constitution Hall due to the color of her skin. Instead, the FDR administration and the NAACP hastily invited her to switch venues to the Lincoln Memorial, where she sang to a crowd of 75,000 on Easter Sunday. Her rendition of "America" became a symbol of resistance to European fascism and homegrown American racism, and became one of the first steps to a civil rights movement. Twenty-four years later in 1963, Martin Luther King, Jr. recited his "I Have a Dream" speech here to a crowd of over 300,000 during one of the largest civil rights rallies at the time. His speech would forever change the way America would view civil rights, and is today a symbol of dissent, healing and promise to citizens and activists worldwide. by shdw100 The Lincoln Memorial is a fitting tribute to the 16th President of the United States. The massive statue and the famous speeches written on the inside walls help you to realize what a great man that he was. Leave a Comment

by dzni Well, is there much explanation necessary? It's famous, everyone has heard of it, it has appeared in numerous movies.... alright, it's a big monument with a huge statue of a sitting Abraham Lincoln, at the top of the stairs. It's actually a good view from the top of the stairs too. Leave a Comment

by DanielF The Lincoln Memorial, on the opposite extreme of the Mall, looks also like a reinterpretation of a Greek temple. The names of the States are carved in its frise and it hosts the famous statue of Abraham Lincoln. From the Memorial you have one of the best view points on the Capitol, the Washington Monument and the ensemble of the Mall. Leave a Comment

by 10eke The Lincoln memorial is located at the western end of the mall. From the steps you have a great view of the Washington Monument with the Reflecting Pool and the Capitol Building at the other end of the mall. Aside from the historical importance, the Lincoln Memorial is an impressive building. It was intended to make a statement, and it really does. From these steps, Martin Luther King made his 'I have a dream' speech. This was the location of all kinds of protest marches and speeches. It is also the location of all kinds of national celebrations. You could call the protests celebrations of freedom of speech. The Gettysburg Address is inscribed in one of the walls, The ones reading it are Americans who didn't really pay attention in school or Europeans. The other Americans know it by heart. Most Europeans never heard of it, well for all of you this is a link to the text of the Gettysburg Address. By the way, a score equals 20, so 'four score and seven years' equals 87 years, it is similar to the french quatre-vingt-sept. Leave a Comment
