Silver Falls
  • Tip Rating:
  • Silver Falls is fairly Impressive but does not show well in photos. It faces south and usually has poor lighting. The largest drop of the falls is about 40 feet (12 meters)and with the upper tiers adds to about 95 feet (28 meters). More interesting than the height is the gorge that the river has followed after the falls. Large piles of fallen logs and green water highlight the alpine nature of the river.

  • Directions: From the Southeast corner of the park. Take SR 123 south past the intersection with 706 (Stevens Canyon Road). Go .3 miles to a large turnout on your right. Follow a well worn path and the signs directing the way about 1/5 mile to the falls.

    ZigZag Falls
  • Tip Rating:
  • This waterfall is encountered along SR-123 going south in the eastern side of the park. It lies just feet from the side of the road. The falls are a wide fan that veils about 50 feet (15 meters) into a deep pool. I believe it would be much less impressive or non-existent later in the year but in the early snow melt season it is very photogenic and lies in a well shaded tranquilic gorge.

If you want to see the sunset as I have been lucky enough to capture in my photos, make sure you're at the west entrance of the park with about 30 mins-1 hour before actual sunset. If you're fortunate to have a clear day, you'll see an amazing show of pink, purple, etc., transform the mountain from daylight to night.
The pictures in the albums were taken just before you get in to the actual forest part of the park, before the National Park entrance.

Open daily from mid-April into early October, and weekends and holidays only the rest of the year.

Lots of informations hand-out at the counter. The upper level offers 360 degree viewing platform.

A fast-food-style snack bar at Jackson Visitor Center offers hot dogs, hamburgers, sandwiches, and drinks.

93 miles around the entire mountain. The guidebook I was reading recommended 10-14 days to do it. For those of us with less time, there are plenty of opportunities to hop on it for at least a short hike to see some of the sights that Rainier has to offer. Elevation gains can be all over the place, depending on where you jump on, so get an idea of where you are going before you go there!

    Skyline Trail Hike
A 5.4 mile hiking loop through high alpine meadows with some of the best views in the Pacific Northwest. Starts/ends at Paradise Visitor Center (elev 5400 feet) and takes you to Panorama Point (elev 6800 feet). Can be very crowded in the Summer, but well worth it.
