The coffee shop is voted as the #1 coffee shop in Port Angeles. The coffee shop displays their awards they have received for so many years. I wondered why so we stopped by the coffee shop while we ate at the Subway. The restaurant has a great set up. There are leather couches that entice you to go and sit down just like you sit in your own living room. There are coffee tables, too. There are newspapers everywhere. The coffee shop has a cozy-look. On the walls of the coffee shop is a bulleting board where there are about 50 refrigerator magnets - mostly, wise-sayings in color yellow and white. Also, the coffee shop owner hanged on the walls their several awards as the best coffee shop in Port Angeles.

Drip coffee for me and mocha for my husband. The restaurant has an array of healthy food drinks and fruit salads. My daughter picked up some fruit trays for herself and some cheese sticks!

Hotel dining room is called the Roosevelt Room, named after U.S. President Franklin, who visited Lake Quinault Lodge on a visit just 9 months before he signed the bill that created Olympic National Park. Breakfast meal offers the normal choices and includes a large variety of omelettes. Lunch consists of salads, sandwiches and burgers ranging in price from $7to $8. Children's menu is available. Dinner is reasonable with entrees such as pasta, seafood, and steaks up to $25.

Breakfast is my favorite...just great hashbrowns, sourdough toast, eggs and ham.

Despite my grumblings about the Sol Duc "resort", it did have a pretty nice restaurant which served pretty decent food. To me, it was an ill-fitting attempt at more than casual dining. A wine bar and extensive list of alcohol to complement entrees such as steak and seafood went way beyond the burger and fries selection I expected.

It was a casual atmosphere, people in shorts after a long day of hiking, semi cleaned up after a brief tepid shower eating at tables with candles just did not seem to mix for me. But the food was good and the prices, while a bit high, were not entirely unreasonable.

On night #1, I tried the salmon alfredo pasta which was delicious. Smoked salmon in a creamy garlic sauce was a winning combination along with some pretty good garlic bread. On night two, we decided not to utilize the kitchen and headed to the lodge. It was a pretty long hiking day and we were starved. We ordered the steamed mussels and were given a bowl of several dozen of them. I had the burger and fries and Guy ordered the trout. Both were delicious.

Hoh Rain Forest Area: The "Hoh" Store

There are no restaurants in the Hoh rain forest area. There is a general store which sells camping supplies and other various snack items. We kept referring to it as the "Hoh Store" although I do not believe that was its actual name. Caffeine junkies will be pleased to know that they sell extra large cans of "Jolt" Cola here. But, if you're planning to spend the day at the Hoh Rain Forest area, its best to bring some food along with you, as you won't find much here other than snacks and sodas.

  • We didn't spent much time in restaurants as we were not exactly very close to any and we had stove in our cabin where we could something ourselves. One day we went into Forks town and ordered a pizza from Pacific Pizza which was delicious! The people were very friendly, the price was good and the taste was excellent.

We ordered the medium pepperoni pizza with green peppers...delicious. There is a whole array of pizza's you can choose from.

The best thing to do in Olympic National Park is to get outdoors. The three park lodging properties have restaurants with decent food, but we wanted a more outdoors experience. On our last night in the park, we packed a picnic dinner and found a spot along Lake Crescent. It was a great place to wade in the water and watch the sun slowly set. The food wasn't anything special, but you couldn't beat the atmosphere.

  • There's a supermarket on 101 as you pass through Forks, and they have a deli counter where you can order sandwiches, chips, etc. There are not a lot of places to eat along the western side of the park, so this is an option. The name of the grocery store escapes me, but you won't be able to miss it (if you do, just turn around and go back - Forks is pretty small!) It'll run you about $7 for chips and a sandwich, but as I mentioned, you don't have a ton of choices in the area!

Crazy Fish: hot fish tacos and cool jazz

  • This casual joint has lots of atmosphere, good food, friendly service, and live music most nights. It looked as if lots of people came by just for drinks and to listen to the music. Plenty of local brew to sample. Because we went on a Wednesday it was 'Jazz Jam', which was fun, but other nights feature other types of music apparently.

Food was good and plentiful. For $35 including a beer each the two of us shared fish tacos with mahi mahi, rice & beans, chipotle poppers (delicious), and ginger pork potstickers.

We like eating out as much as anyone but when you travel across country to visit a national park, you want to spend as much time in it as possible. Eating at campgrounds can be a chore and for some it is a nightmare but for us, it's part of what makes the parks special in the first place.

Olympic's car campgrounds are all great, with lots of space and privacy. You are truly in nature and there's not much that can beat eating a nice meal in one of the most beautiful settings on earth.

Well, one thing does and that's doing it with no one around. To experience that, you should try backpacking. By hiking into the park's interior, you escape 99% of the crowds. You literally live and so dine in nature.

While car camping, we tend to cook a lot of pasta dishes. It's healthy and gives us lots of much needed carbs. It's also cheap and when you are traveling for six months, that is always a factor. We supplement that with lots of local cheeses and craft beer.

For backpacking, dried foods seem easiest to prepare and clean up after. They also save time and fuel so you can enjoy being in nature more. One thing not to skimp on is the morning hot drink. We love having a hot chocolate in the crisp morning air before hitting the trail!
