    Fins (officially Fins Coastal Cuisine): Facing the Water, Not Necessarily Seafood

    While the emblem of Fins is a fish, the fact is that there is a lot here that isn't sea food. While expensive for Port Townsend, Fins has a fine view out the window, and very good food that makes it reasonably worth while to eat here at least once.

    This is not a suit and tie affair, but at the very least it would be a good idea to wear a button-down shirt to blend in with the locals better. It's a table cloth and multiple-fork affair, and not somewhere you want to go in a t-shirt.

    Take a look up at the rafters, especially those huge cross beams that help support them! This is an old-style Pacific Northwest building, and note that those huge beams are made from a single piece of wood rather than being laminated together as they would be today.

    Expect the drinks to be reasonably expensive, but the bar is fairly well equipped and there is an interesting list of eccentric cocktails that would be interesting to try.

    Favorite Dish: Wild Mushroom Ravioli for $19 was pretty good.
    I really enjoyed the cup of soup of the day ($4), which was butternut squash.
    I also had a Stawsil ($9.25), which is Strawberry infused Vodka, muddled basil & lemon.
    For dessert I had the Cheesecake du Jour ($7) which on this night was a Marionberry mixture.

    Jordini's Subs: Sub Sandwhiches to Go or Stay

    Jordini's tries to be a lot of different things, including meet the needs of those who want a quick take-out sandwhich for lunch, plus a place where people can go and linger for a longer time over their food. There is a small balcony overlooking the water.

    It is very easy for the seating along the wall to become fully occupied, and the balcony isn't open during cold weather.

    As with many places in Port Townsend, the walls are decorated with local art.

    The bar offers an assortment of drinks to go with your sandwhich.

    The location is in an old department store that has been divided into separate smaller stores. Therefore, the restaurant is hard to find from the street unless you walk past it - as with many places in Port Townsend. It is all the way at the back of the building.

    There is a shelf of board games and a very small collection of books.

    The restroom is located just outside the entrance to the restaurant in the main hallway of the retail area. It is locked and a key is available from Jordini's counter to open it. However, you should probably bring some hand sanitizer for use after you touch the key - not knowing who has used it before or how sanitary their habits are.

    Favorite Dish: I went for the special advertised on the sign out front, and it had everything I wanted in a sandwhich and then some (in a good way) and found the price to be reasonable for what I got.

    The special that day was a mayo, mustard, pastrami, pepperchinnis, onion, red pepper and cheddar panini.

    Elevated Ice Cream (including candy store): 1 + 1 = 1 Wonderful Sugar Delight

    While basically decorated and named as one store, there are actually two separate stores here: the Elevated Candy Shop, and the candy store next door to it.

    The candy store is open more limited hours than the ice cream store. The ice cream store is open until 10 most nights, even in the off season, while the candy store is only open until 10 Fridays and Saturdays.

    However, the ice cream store also sells some of the cany that comes from the candy store, so you can still get a limited selection of items from the candy store if they happen to be closed and the ice cream store is open.

    All of the ice cream is basically hand made here at the store, and much of the candy is made at the candy store. There are some items that are listed as having non-local contents. For example, there happened to be a sign on one of the flavors that the fruit comes from a farm elsewhere in on the Olympic Peninsula, and not right there in Port Townsend.

    Favorite Dish: HA! A favorite here? Impossible! I bet I would like all of it!

    However, the Italian Ice seems a particularly good option, and though the flavors are somewhat limited in that particular set, the flavor is quite good still, and supposedly this is a healthier option. The price is $0.62 per ounce (approximately $0.022 per gram).

    The ice cream pies look particularly good, but I haven't had a slice of one just yet!

    Waterfront Pizza: Makes the Whole southeast end Smell of Pizza

    This pizza establishment seems to be busy at almost all hours. It is split into two sections: the lower section where they make the pizza, and also featuring a very small and tight dining room with very limited seating, and an upstairs room where there is more seating and a fairly small but well equipped bar, and an actual wait staff.

    However, you can not order pizza in the upstairs dining room. If you want to eat up there, you order your pizza (either slice or full pizza) down below and then go up the stairs to the top floor.

    The artwork on the walls is eccentric and local, and to be expected in Port Townsend.

    For those eating pizza by the slice, the pizza available from the display case is only marked in the basic types of pizza ("veggie for example, and there are several different types on that shelf") but no detail on their ingredients.

    It is unfortunate that for a place with a name like "Waterfront Pizza" the side of the restaurant aimed at the water is devoted to kitchen space on both levels, and the only view is of the street on both levels.

    I have no complaint with the food, however - its good pizza.

    Favorite Dish: I ordered two different types of pizza on the "veggie" shelf. This included something with olives and pineapple slices on it, and someting else with a bit of cheese and tomato on it - each were in the $3.75 range.

    The pizza was good, but I have no idea what the name of the particular type of pizza was in either case - I just ordered what looked good to me and I wasn't disappointed.

    When I went upstairs, I asked for a hard cider, and found they had a 12 oz (355 ml) bottle of Wyder's Pear Cider for $3.50 and so I had that.

    Better Living Through Coffee: Probably Some Good Coffee Here

    I stopped by for a little something to eat before the ferry trip over to Fort Casey State Park. From Water Street, this little place is hidden behind another eating place, but Better Living Through Coffee sits on the edge of the water and therefore has a much better view than would be offered by those places facing Water Street.

    The place seems to be quite popular with locals, so I thought the food might be good, and the coffee is almost certainly good though I didn't have any (after all, the people have to have some reason for coming in here).

    There is a bulletin board with a number of local events listed, and this may be a very useful spot to look for entertainment during your trip.

    The interior features various artworks that appear to be by local artists.

    Favorite Dish: I wound up having an egg and cheddar wrap for $4, that seemed a little small for the pirce, but was definitely cheaper and faster than a full blown breakfast at one of the other options in town.

    All items are fair trade and organically grown.

    It was fairly dry, which may not seem like a good thing but at least it also wasn't dripping with cooking fat - so they aim for healthy food rather than a greasy pile like some places might.

    However, further investigation is warranted, as there are probably better options on their menu. I've got it on the list to investigate further the next time I am in town.

    El Serape Mexican Restaurant: Award Winning Mexican Food in Downtown Core

    The first item of note about this restaurant that although it has the same name as a small regional chain of restaurants in the Olympia and southern Puget Sound area, this restaurant is not part of that chain according to any source I have been able to find.

    Located in one of the historic buildings in downtown Port Townsend, this little restaurant has a reasonably extensive amount of artwork on the walls that reflect Port Townsend's status as a bit of an artist's community.

    However, the item that Tourists should note more than anything else is the sheer number of awards scattered about the place - to the point where they are having trouble finding where to put them all. In some respects this does reflect achievement, but on the other hand there isn't a huge amount of competition in Port Townsend - though there are a few good restaurants here.

    Based on the rather lively event that happened at a neighboring table during my brief visit, I can tell you that if they find out that it is your birthday you could get quite a reception.

    Favorite Dish: I had the vegetarian chimichunga ($8.50) without the additional rice ($1.50) and a strawberry Margarita ($4.95) without the Cuervo Gold (additional $1).

    There are several other flavored margaritas available: Lime, Banana, Raspberry, and something that is called "Grande" which must have quite an assortment of fruit in it for $7.25 (and for that one adding Cuervo Gold is an additional $2.

    The food comes hot, and included a bowl of chips and salsa (at some places you pay extra for those as an appetizer), and the quantity of food for the price was very reasonable.

    Water Street Creperie: Great Crepe for Breakfast

    Generally, in Port Townsend you can expect eccentric decoration in the restaurants, and Water Street Creperie is no exception. I happened to visit in September, and as Port Townsend has its annual film festival in September the Creperie was decorated in borrowed eccentric and historic film posters.

    The Creperie is on the "city" side of water street, and therefore the view out the window isn't too good. The other side of the street has the edge of a parking lot for the new strip mall, but the mall building isn't directly across the street so that it is possible to get a slight view out towards the waterway.

    There is outdoor seating of sorts, and the upper floor of the building overhangs the lower level somewhat, so that there is pretty significant covering from the rain.

    The structure is one of Port Townsend's historic gems: the Kuhn Building from 1892.

    Favorite Dish: This is definitely a popular place to come for breakfast and coffee, and even well past normal restaurant breakfast hours there was a fairly common stream of people coming in to order coffee and crepes.

    I had a wonderful goat cheese and honey crepe, which was on special for $7 (thanks for putting that nice big sign out front guys!). It was also a bit larger than I was expecting, and was really more of a small breakfast omlette size than what some of other places serve and call a "crepe". This is more of a real breakfast.

    Port Townsend Brewing: a beer garden experience

    Port Townsend Brewing Company would be more suitable as a nightlife spot except it's not always open at night and even when it is, it's not open late, closing by 9 PM even on Fridays. They do however have live music in their little beer garden and have a large selection of their house brewed beers on tap. They do not serve food but you can bring your own with you. We brought some cheese and crackers in to enjoy with our beers. Everything is self-service.

    The Tasting Room & Beer Garden have only been open for one year though the Brewery itself has been around since 1997. It's a nice place with reasonable prices that we just happened to drive by on our way out of town. Really, I did not have any plans to visit this brewery though my wife surely questions me to this day on this one.

    Favorite Dish: Bring your own food as they do not serve any.

    They have a large selection of their beers to go in 22 oz bottles at better prices than you will find at stores. Since we were heading to the ferry we only had a couple but I did buy some for the road.

    On tap at the Tasting Room: 1) Peeping Peater Scotch Ale (7% alcohol)-Amber malty brew with some smoky roast overtones. 2) Brown Porter (5.6%)-Chocolaty brown porter with bittersweet finish. 3) Boatyard Bitter (5.3%)-special dry hopped version on nitro-Unfiltered honey hued English style bitter w/ creamy dense head. A balanced session ale with clean semi-dry finish. Best beer we had in Port Townsend.

    Bottles bought here, sampled later: 1) Boatyard Bitter-even in bottle form, this is a beauty. Amber with massive head. A beautiful mix of malt and hops. It retains an English feel despite American hops. Quite a session ale. 2) Hop Diggidy IPA (6%)-Golden with gorgeous rocky head. Floral hop nose and soft palate. Nicely balanced. Long dry finish. 3) Barley Wine (10.5%)-Dark amber with rocky tan head. Rich roasty malt with raisin nose and hint in flavor. Bitterness from roast and ample hops keep in from being cloying. Quite nice.

    We paid $16 for everything. Either it was very cheap or the bartender forgot that we had a few beers in the beer garden.

    Cape Cleare Salmon Stand: salmon at the market

    The Port Townsend Farmer's Market is a fun place to grab something to eat. One option is Cape Cleare Salmon. This very green company is noted for delivering their freshly flash frozen salmon caught in Alaska by bicycle to the Ballard Farmer's Market in Seattle. Based in Port Townsend, the company has a small stand at the PT Farmer's Market as well. Their colorful artwork is easy to spot even in artsy Port Townsend.

    Favorite Dish: Along with many of their to go products like fresh frozen salmon (frozen at sea immediately after being caught), they have smoked and canned varieties. For those on the road like us, they thankfully have grilled salmon sandwiches. Though not cheap at $7, it was very good quality and fair sized. We split one since there were lots of other goodies to sample at the market.

    Water Street Brewing & Ale House: a brewpub in an old historical building

    Water Street Brewing is what brought us to Port Townsend and unlike some places that get overshadowed by their unexpectedly cool hometowns, this place held its own despite a lack of first rate beer. Housed in a great red brick turn-of-the-century historical building, the pub manages to combine an artsy alternative flair with a woodsy old world nautical charm. With high ceilings and eclectic furnishings, the long old wood carved bar is very much its centerpiece, full as it very well should be, with locals. A huge painting of a naked woman being satisfied by mystical creatures hangs ominously at the end of the pub. It was busy and boisterous.

    Favorite Dish: The menu is regional fair with many pub grub additions. Much befitting its port location, the menu has many seafood options as well as some vegetarian ones, a good choice for a noted enclave of hippies. We had just come from a couple of weeks camping in Olympic National Park so it's likely we had something with meat in it but in my excitement at eating out for the first time in weeks, I forgot to take a photo and my memory fails me as to what we did in fact have. All I can say is that the food was quite good and though not cheap, was fairly priced. Dinner for two including five beers and tip came to $66.

    Of course, I did take beer notes so here goes: 1) Millennium Falcon Porter-An unfiltered amber with little head and low carbonation was more of a homebrew with yeasty overtones and more malt than hops. After 9 days of backpacking, it went down well. 2) McPrior's Irish Stout-Bitter chocolate palate w/ fairly light body. More of a porter than a stout. 3) Nina' Imperial IPA-Amber w/ thin head & citrus nose. Soft mouthfeel and fairly hoppy bitter palate. None of the beers were great but were certainly not bad either. The food was quite good and combined with them serving their own house brewed beer and it being such a cool place to hang out makes it a place I would return to.

    The Sirens: Good Seafood and Drinks with a View of Harbor

    On a clear day, one of the important things to find in a restaurant in Port Townsend is one that has a view. There are a lot of places here that don't have much of a view. The Sirens, however, has a wonderful view of Port Townsend Harbor over to Indian Island and Marrowstone Island. We got to see sea otters hunting, eating and playing in the water just off the shore of the restaurant.

    However, the place is somewhat hard to find. The entrance is a small door between two storefronts on Water Street, which is one of Port Townsend's main streets. You will have to find a parking place somewhere on the street and walk several blocks. As soon as you enter the door, you must climb stairs and weave your way through several corridors before entering the restaurant, which is located on the 2nd floor overlooking Port Townsend Harbor.

    The environment is old world pub, but you will want to try the seafood here.

    When it first opened in 1994, the idea was to create a gathering place for locals. Having visited Port Townsend in the 1980s, again around 1992, and now in 2009, I can tell you that the Port Townsend of 1994 was considerably different then over now. While tourists did visit Port Townsend, most of them bypassed everything on the Quimper Peninsula as being out of the way and uninteresting, and instead went on their way to Olympic National Park, Port Angeles, and campgrounds and resorts closer to the National Park.

    Today, far more tourists visit Port Townsend, and The Sirens has been declared a "must eat at" restaurant by local food gossip. Since word of mouth is a huge marketing tool in small cities like Port Townsend ("Where do you suggest that we eat?") The Sirens had a lot more traffic than they were originally organized to handle. Today, the simple short menu has gone by the wayside and a full assortment of dishes, pizza, seafood, and other delights are offered.

    Unfortunately, there are still some limitations about the original arrangements: there are only two rest room stalls: one for men, the other for women. During crowded days, this may be a problem. When there is a big event in town, the service may be somewhat slow due to the limited space and staff to cook all the food that people want prepared for them.

    Ordering food means staning in line at the "Order Here" sign. Sometimes there can be quite a line there. It is only a symptom of the success of The Sirens.

    Favorite Dish: Thoroughly enjoyed a seafood dish here, but I can't remember what it was! I know it had clams in it.

    VirtualTourist's price range only has a category of $11 to $20, but it is in the lower range of that. Think more in the $8 to $14 range for the average person getting a dish, appetizer and drink of some sort.

    We had a wonderful meal at Jodie's on Madison. It is located on the corner of Washington (1 block from Water street) and Madison, across the street from City Hall. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. We were there for dinner and had a great time. The atmosphere is friendly and casual, but the food isn't simple fare. All the entree's were between $12 and $18 (which included a delicious salad or soup). My husband and I had Seafood Del Mar with clams, prawns and calamari in a spicy red sauce with cloves of roasted garlic throughout. The seafood was cooked perfectly, not chewy which I detest. They had a limited, but well selected wine list and prices were reasonable for ample pours. My brother and sister-in-law have been there for lunch and loved it as well. I understand that you can have your choice of potato or sweet potato fries with your fish. When you are in PT and want a good meal, give Jodie's a try.

    dogs-a-foot is a great little hot dog place.
    in true port townsend style it's an alternative little venue run by a friendly thai/american couple that serves you nice hot dogs in a very cheerful manner.
    it's one of those places you should go if you want to see that america is more than just mc'donalds.

    Lanza's: Italiano ristorante

    Lanza's has been around for a long time and it's easy to see why. The restaurant was very cozy and provided a good feeling the minute you walked in the door. The service was great and fast. This is definitely one of the choices to eat for lunch or dinner in town.

    Favorite Dish: The pizza was very good and we were told that the pasta, antipastas, and desserts were nothing to sneeze at either.

    Public House: Pub Food

    The Public House is located right on the main drag and is a burger joint with several beers on tap as well. They also have live music some nights of the week to enjoy. We ducked in here after getting soaking wet and warmed ourselves up with a pretty good burger with the standard steak fries. It was good, not great food.

    Favorite Dish: Go for any one of the many burgers and beers on tap.
