Skykomish Things to Do

  • Deception Falls

For anyone thinking, these waterfalls look great but I don’t think that they are safe enough to bring my small children on, here is your answer. The loop trail at Deception Falls State Park is a great location for a short hike on a well developed trail which also has well developed viewpoints.Having said that, I usually don’t stay on the trail and...

  • Scenic Falls

Scenic Falls is a waterfall that can be extremely photogenic or a complete wash depending on how much water is flowing. I’ve been to this waterfall about 5 times and each time I was hoping that the water level would be lower. Finally I got what I was hoping for and some snow as well.At 113 feet (34 meters) the falls is fairly tall but it is the...

  • Log Choke Falls

Log Choke Falls is not a very creative name for this falls but it is fitting, that is until the log is swept away by some large volume of water. This log seems pretty well stuck however so the name will be suitable for a while. This waterfall is about 35 feet (10 meters) tall and consists of two steps. The namesake log parallels the main tier and in...

  • Alpine Falls

Alpine Falls is about 40 feet (12 m) tall but caries a fairly large volume of water. It is also very easy to get to. From the turnout follow one of many paths to the river and work your way down to the base of the falls. The amphitheater around the falls makes for a very visually compelling site and in high water it becomes a complete monster. When...

  • Klinger Grotto Falls

Klinger Grotto Falls is interesting in many ways. It falls about 60 feet (18 meters) right behind a large boulder that prevents any direct views but adds to the mossy Washington-ness of it. The falls are located just a few hundred feet from the busy Hwy 2 but cannot be seen from the highway. This fact makes them somewhat difficult to find....

  • Stevens Pass

Stevens Pass is in my opinion the best ski resort that is close to Seattle. It usually gets more snow than Snoqualmie and has a larger area. The runs are also longer. The Lodge has a restraunt that serves pizza and other non native food. It is fairly expensive but for the convenience of eating on the mountain it's worth it. The bar does serve beer,...

  • Railway Bridges

While driving from Everett toward Wenatchee the views seen along the road are awesome. Their are several rail bridges along the way as the train tracks cross the river and weave with the road as well. Many of these bridges are over 100 years old but continue to see traffic every day. Be careful though the speed limit is 60 MPH the whole way minus a...

Mount Index Cafe and Lounge 1 more image

by GuthrieColin Written Jan 16, 2010

This restaurant is just about the only thing in the area for breakfast lunch or dinner. It has done a pretty good job too. It seems that most small towns must have at least one small diner that picks up the local eating out crowd. This one just happens to be right on the highway where as the town of Index is further up the road.

    Whistlin Post

    by Elli99fh Written Jan 26, 2004

The Whistlin' Post is where you go in Skykomish to drink beer, shoot pool, play darts and socialize. It is within stumbling distance of the hotel. It is a good, plain, old-fashioned tavern -- dim, smoky and full of local flavor. The jukebox is surprisingly diverse.

If the right person is there, you can also get excellent pressure-fried chicken at the Whistlin' Post.

Skykomish Warnings and Dangers

  • Bring snacks!

Skykomish at night. You're hungry. The restaurant at the Cascadia Hotel is closed. Indefinitely. The Whistling Post is open, but the person who makes the fried chicken isn't there. You now have the choice of a) the mini mart at the Chevron across the bridge, b) driving down the mountain for half an hour or more till you get to a restuarant or...

  • Beware of the Train!

There is a train track that goes through town, which is not really the danger. We were staying at the Cascadia and the train whistle scared the **** out of me when it woke me in the middle of the night. I was sleeping so well I thought I was at home, where there are no trains, and I didn't know what the heck it was until I woke up a little. But it...
