The downtown area of Spokane is a huge shopping area, blocks and blocks of stores and theaters, and restaurants. It is beautifully done, right on the river, with a very large city park. For us, who rarely get to a city, this is a very friendly and fun place to visit.

The area called Riverside Park is bounded by the City Centre to the south, the river and Islands to the north and basically bridges to the east and west.

There is a bike/walking path along both sides of the river, which allows for travels alongside the river for many miles.

Some bridges do cross the river near downtown, but the activities on the Islands occur without hindrance.

Attraction in Riverfront Park include an Imax theatre, an 1909 Loof fCarousel, park tour train, amusement rides, restaurant and arcade, with an Ice skating arena in winter.

The business and one of the shopping areas in Spokane are quite close to the park, so if you tire of the activities in the park you can walk over for a choice of restaurants or some serious shopping.

Many of the buildings down town are connected by pedestrian walkways above the traffic.

The previous photo of Gonzaga University showed the Spokane river as a serene, calm river gently moving from east to west. I have also shown the two side of the river at Riverfront Park. One the calm waters great for boating, the other views show the rapids on the almost uncontrolled section of the river.

Now you see the combined streams of the river come together and crash down a waterfall and then flow west in the narrow canyon towards High Bridge Park.

I believe the repairs are to the Monroe Street Birdge.

There are many natural areas all over Spokane and the surrounding area. It is a very "foresty" area. You may want to check out the surrounding areas where you will find many parks, places to go canoeing, hike along trails, and just enjoy nature. There is snow in the wintertime so most places are only accessiable during the Spring and Summer....and during the Fall it is hunting season so some areas are off limits.

Once again the contrast between the tow parts of the river is amazing.

There is a form of spillway to ensure anyone on the river is not swept into the rapids and later the waterfall.

I guess in this year of 2004 there is a 30th anniversary of the original Expo 74. the leagacy of the expo is the enhanced Riverfront Park and the fun and pleasure it gives to both visitors and residents alike.

The site of Riverfront park is an interesting mix of slow moving water, islands, pathways and rapids to the north.

There are many view points for those interested in photography, those from the north side of the river or the north side of the Islands allow for some fast flowing water crashing across rocks as the river speeds west.

The south side of the island shows of the idyllic side of the Spokane river, cross the bridge to the island and go north to see the wild side of the river.

    The contrast is amazing.
