Vashon Things to Do
In the summer, usually in July, the island has their annual Strawberry Festival. There is a parade and a weekend filled with festivities including an arts and crafts fair.
There is also a large art colony on the island.
The island is actually two islands that are connected by a sand bar that was filled in and paved over years ago. Vashon Island is more heavily forested with some farm and pasture land. Maury Island is more farm land.

The Stray Dog in the center of downtown Vashon. It has wonderful Northwest cuisine. Great salads and sandwiches. Pastas and soups. The deserts are to die for, and the staff is very helpful and friendly.
The best dining on the Island. It could compete with some resturants in Seattle too.
The resturant is small, with high ceilings and simple tables. It reminds me of family cafes in Europe. There is one large table in the center but most of the other tables sit 2 or 4. It has a nice intimate feel to it.
Favorite Dish: Their Warm Spinach Salad with Sirloin is great. Also their soups. When I was there last I had a Curried Squash soup that had more body and depth of flavor than any squash soup I had had before.
The only way to get to the island is by Washington State Ferry or private boat. The ferries run from Southworth dock in West Seattle and from Pt. Defiance Park in Tacoma. You can also get a passenger ferry from downtown Seattle, but you had better have someone waiting to pick you up.
You can ride your bikes across on the ferries..the passenger ferry takes a limited amount. There is also public transportation in the way of a bus.
Vashon Local Customs
Just go with the flow. There is a lot of big money on the island now and you can see it in some of the shops and galleries. But the people are still laid back latte loving Northwesties.
Note the picture of some locals enjoying a festive holiday. Your's truly is in the center.
Vashon What to Pack
Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: It depends on what you want to do and when you want to do it. It rains a lot in the Northwest so rain gear is essental. Other than that, for the island it is casual wear.
The summers do get warm so don't think you will need a coat.
Vashon Off The Beaten Path
Vashon has a Russian Orthodox Monestary. It is about 9 years old. It's in the woods of Maury Island. The only designation is the Orthodox cross at the side of the entry road.
The monks sell teas and coffees to support their monestary and the island people have taken to them with whole hearted support.
Fondest memory: Growing up on the beach, the thing that sticks out in my mind was the times we would go clam digging or when my Uncle Fergie would take us kids Gooey Duck hunting. Gooey Ducks are large razor clams (see photo). They are hard to catch as they dig very rapidly down into the sand and you have to be strong and fast to grab the neck and pull one up.
When I got older and Gooey Duck hunting was not in my area of interest my mom and her friends would hire my cousin and his pals (The Rat Pack) and they would do the hunting. They were great at it.
So, if you know someone who has beach property with good prospects..have them take you out one morning at a low tide and have some nice, dirty fun and then some great eating.
