Incredibly scenic and quaint. It feels like you're on a set for a wild west movie. The dusty roads, the creeks, the colours... the smells... it's wonderful in the summer. It's a peaceful retreat near...

My friends and I camped at the Ballard Campground about 15 minutes West of Winthrop, WA. Nice grounds, close to trailheads, clean facilities and occasionally running water. Highly recommended!

The food is your typical pub venue. Lots of hamburgers, fried food and basic appetizers. The food was decent and the beer was AWESOME!! Loved the beer! Maybe after 3 days of camping...anything would have been good, but I genuinely believe that the beer was top notch! The staff was friendly but needed more help. It was slow to get our menus and to order our food. The beer, however, was definitely worth the wait!

Favorite Dish: The nachos were DELICIOUS! And any of the beer!

Being a 17-year-old goof

Winthrop plays up its cowboy culture to the extreme. some may call it corny, but it's all in good fun.

Here I am being silly infront of the horses. While the horses weren't real, the poo underneath them was definitely real! So was that car in the background. ;)

GO the EXACT speed limit through the small towns on your way to Winthrop!! My friend got a speeding ticket for going 40 in a 35 mph zone! The cop had an unmarked car too!! YIKES!

Off The Beaten Path

Chelan is off the beaten path...

Chelan is off the beaten path..., Winthrop

Carmanah Says:  Chelan is off the beaten path from Winthrop - it's a few hours drive away down the highway, but a gorgeous drive at that! Chelan's famous for its lake and apple-heritage town. For more info, check out my Chelan page!Photo: My sister, my mom and me infront of Lake Chelan.

Follow the North Cascades...

Follow the North Cascades..., Winthrop

Carmanah Says:  Follow the North Cascades Highway (Hwy 20) westbound through the Cascade Mountains. Here's my sister (and her hat!), my Dad and my Mom at Washington Pass, the highest peak on the highway. It's quite amazing. We drove up the highway and decided to stop off at this park which...

Exploring Winthrop

Exploring Winthrop, Winthrop

Carmanah Says:   When I was 17 years old my parents took us to Winthrop, a wild-western town in the Methow Valley. Everything was in country western theme. And while it sounds super cheesy, the gimmick actually works. Winthrop isn't really near any major tourist attraction, so those that...

Wild flowers

Wild flowers, Winthrop

Carmanah Says:   I remember it being a warm summer evening and discovering the fields of wildflowers nextdoor to our hotel. It was gorgeous, as you can see from this picture! There's something about the smell of a field of wild flowers in the summer that makes me a very happy person!

Shopping in Winthrop

Shopping in Winthrop, Winthrop

Carmanah Says:  Take time to visit the shops along the main street. Most stores have the old-fashioned western false fronts, and the wooden boardwalk sidewalks. Most, if not all of the shops are local businesses - you won't find the Gap or Nike here, thankfully!

Panoramic views everywhere

Panoramic views everywhere, Winthrop

Carmanah Says:   I remember quite vividly the scenery around Winthrop. The town really consists of one major road, with a few side streets. The residential parts of the town are located in the surrounding areas. You could drive up tot he top of the nearby hills, and you'd have these...

Stroll through town along the boardwalk

Stroll through town along the boardwalk, Winthrop

Carmanah Says:  Winthrop likes to play up on its wild western theme, but it works! The sidewalks are old fashioned board walk, making it a pleasant stroll as you see what the town has to offer. Many of the stores sell old cowboy/western themed gifts, but it's not junky or tacky. I remember...
