Lorraine, Emily, and Joe at the top of the hill

There's a great sledding hill that we discovered several years ago. It's pretty steep, so you get moving fast. The only drawback is the road that is at the bottom of the hill.

Building adjacent to the outdoor ice rink

Canaan Valley State Park has an ice skating rink just down the hill from the Lodge. During the summer, the building adjacent to the ice skating rink serves the outdoor swimming pool.

SurfingLuvr Says:  My family and I stayed at the Canaan Valley Resort and it was wonderful. It was in the mountains so there wasn't any city sounds and it was a great place for a peaceful stay. The most amazing part of the trip was when we were there, the deer are so friendly that they will...

The source of the mystery noises

3am: Awoke to slurping noises and the sound of our frying pan sliding across the ground.Andy was already awake from something-most likely Bambi here-walking between the tent and the snow bank behind us,.a space about 2 feet wide.He was sure it was a bear-Weren't they supposed to be hybernating?I was convinced it was Sasquatch and was looking forward to being on the Today show with my first hand acount.

This is the new base station for the park's ski runs.I think it was finished in 03'.
I love skiing in West Virginia. It's uncrowded and enough of a drop to make it interesting. We mostly go to the other ski slopes at Timberline about 3 miles away.

Equipment: This is where you would pay for your lift tickets and get your rental skis.

Old Ironsides

Equipment: Everybody needs a wood stove in their tent. The temps outside were in the teens and we could keep the inside of the tent in the low 40'sF.And of course after skiing all day everything we had was soaked so a least we could dry stuff alittle.

Our new pal the plow driver

We dug out the campsite for about an hour and a half and weren't making much headway when the guy who was clearing the lots at the x country ski center drove up and offered to clear the rest.He told us that there was so much snow the parks plows wouldn't work anymore and they were leasing his front loader out. I know it's sort of cheating but man that saved us alot of work..

Sir Shackelton survives arctic ordeal

This is our campsite at the state park

Equipment: This is a canvas wall tent with a small wood burning stove inside.I don't think we could have pulled this off in a smaller standard nylon camping tent.
