A short trip from Marlinton is the Cass Railroad. You can take a ride on the train which climbs up the mountain using switchback tracks. They have box lunches available and sometimes a dinner train. It runs during the summer months.

The Moore's motel: clean and cheap motel in beautiful setting, Marlinton

moosemother Says:  This motel is not far from the ski resort and Cass. It is a good clean motel with a swimming pool. It is in a beautiful setting near the Greenbriar River and the hike and bike trail. A nice motel in the country with a swimming pool. The owners are very nice.

Warnings and Dangers

Beware of Bears

Please be careful of the bears. Do not feed the bears. If you see bear cubs, leave the same way you came and quickly. It is dangerous to get near bear cubs, or to get between the cubs and the mother bear. I have had the pleasure of seeing 3 bear cubs in a tree by the road side. We were in a vehicle, and did not linger long to see the mother bear, but we knew she was near by.

Luggage and bags: water proof luggage is a good idea

Also ski clothing if you plan on skiing

Toiletries and Medical Supplies: First aid kit

Photo Equipment: camera

Camping/Beach/Outdoor Gear: Good winter parka
Hat and gloves or mittens
boots

Miscellaneous: Cell phones do not work here.
Some roads are not drivable in the winter because of the snow and ice, even with 4-wheel drive. Take your time on the snow covered roads, as they can be very slick and dangerous.

Near Cass, there is Mecks bakery. It is only open a few days a week. They offer some very good baked goods. I'm not sure if they are Amish or Mennonites.

Favorite thing: This river is beautiful. Hike or bike the trail. See nature. Great for bird watching.

Fondest memory: The people of Marlinton are so friendly and down to earth. It is so nice to get away from the "rat race" and to be able to kick back and relax.
