On the far east side of Morgantown is the airport. Commercial flights from this airfield are under the name US Airways Express (franchise of Colgan Air, Inc.). These flights are three times daily and go to/from Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT). The price of a one-way ticket is about $100 and it is about a 1-hour flight (add another hour of ground and runway time).

Colgan Air is the company that runs the passnger flights at the airport. Their website is http://www.colganair.com/ and the flights are to/from Morgantown and Washington, DC. From DC you can get flights to major cities around the world on a separate carrier.

Morgantown has a comprehensive public transportation (bus) plan. Through well-assigned destinations and overlapping connection points you can get from point A to point B with as few transfers as possible.
The bus company is called Mountain Line and is a consolidation of many privately owned route managers. One ride, one destination is $0.75 ($0.35 for seniors) and you can buy cost-effective passes that reduce the per-destination cost to $0.40.

see the website below for routes, cost details and lists of destinations.

As we were driving through town, we noticed these large tan tubes above and crossing the highways. Later, we were in a shop or restaurant (don't remember which) and asked a local about the tubes. "Hey, that's the purty", he said (meaning the PRT, the Personal Rapid Transit).
The transports are electric-rail driven cars/units running on large rubber tires in tracks within the tubules. Steam heat and wheel wipers keep the tracks free of ice and debris. It is sort of a complicated elevator that moves horizontally from prescribed location to prescribed destination. We did not actually use them ourselves but could see the tops of them over some of the open sections of the routes. They are mostly used for student transport among the many buildings of West Virginia Univ.

  • from North (Pittsburgh)
Take I-79 south. get off at any of the Morgantown Exits and you can get downtown.

    from east (DC/Baltimore)
    take I-68 West.

from south (Charleston, WV or all points south)
    take I-79 North.

You can also fly to Morgantown...the planes aren't that big, though, so unless you like to ride in turbo-prop planes, just drive there.

There is also shuttle service (i think) from the Pittsburgh airport. I would call about that first though.
walk, take the PRT (Person Rapid Transit) - the only one in the world like it, taxis ar ok too...The bus system is getting better, but it is kind of unreliable.

Driving is your best bet, but if you are only going downtown, you don't need to drive.

West Virginia Universtity has some interesting layouts and architecture and its famous PRT system (see http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/d6398/dbd74/9/).

The roads around and through the campus are simple but we were stopped once by campus patrol to find out what we were doing there (without a campus sticker on the window). Many of the buildings are spread out within Morgantown itself; just follow where the PRT goes and you will find the various sites.
So take a camera and take a few minutes and get some nice pics for yourself.

  • Directions: I-79 exit to route 19 (Osage Road), go east on Osage and connect to US19. go east/south on US19 (monogahelia blvd) to the main buildings of the university.

Cooper's Rock State Forest is just outside of Morgantown off I-68. There are many good trails for hiking. My favorite is the Raven Rock trail which is between 1-2 miles of a wide rocky path that culminates with a fairly steep uphill climb at the very end to the Raven Rock overlook. The view from Raven Rock is the best in this part of the state (with the exception that it does have power lines running through it). You can see the Cheat River over 1,000 feet below as it meanders through the valley with visible geologic activity such as point bars and cut banks. There is an easily accesible viewpoint at Cooper's Rock in the park that can be reached even by wheelchair which also provides a spectacular view but Raven Rock is still worth the effort.
There are also several other trails of interest. The Rock City trail is quite easy and very fun as you walk through Rhododendron plants and 40 foot high rock walls surround you. Another tough trail is the Rattlesnake trail which allows for a lot of bouldering to get around.
Also for the rock climbers out there, Cooper's Rock offers rock climbing throughout the park with the exception of the main outlook area. There are maps available at the visitor's center with difficult routes on them.

  • I happened to stumble upon this winery by accident as I was driving through West Virgina one day and saw a sign for a winery, but I had some time so I followed the signs (very well marked) and found myself on a gorgeous overlook before going into a very quaint but nicely put together winery. Since I was driving, I wasn't able to sample everything I wanted, but I was most impressed with their selection of red wines (the whites tended to be thin and tinny). They also had a fairly large selection of fruit wines, but I'm not a fan, so I didn't try any. My favorite overall - a Cab. Sav. for $10.50. The winery was only about 15 minutes off the highway, so if you find yourself in the area, it's worth a stop.
