Appleton Things to Do

  • Houdini at the Castle

The big draw of the History Museum at the Castle is the Houdini display. It was nice and interactive, but was mostly signs about his life and displays about magic in general. A little pricey (and more than is posted on their website) and maybe worth a visit once. The main & ground floor are hardly worth mentioning.

  • The Building For Kids Children's Museum

It is a fun museum for kids of all ages. A really nice art studio, mini golf, water play area, under 3 area, changing exhibits and much more. Admission $7.25 per person.

  • Outagamie County Historical Society

The "Museum at the Castle" in Appleton is operated by the Outagamie County Historical Society. The building was originally constructed as a lodge and temple for the local Masons. It's located on College Avenue, right next to the Lawrence University campus. The famous/notorious Senator Joseph McCarthy (1908-1957) grew up near Appleton, and his...

  • Fishing/Boating on Winnebago and the Fox...

I have done plenty of fishing and boating on Lake Winnebago, The Fox River, Lake Poygen, and Lake Buttes Des Morts in my 10 years here. Winnebago is about 30 miles in length and roughly 5 miles wide and offers many scenic areas for life afloat. There are Walleye andWhite Bass runs throughout the season and fishing can be excellent at times.Just...

  • Harry Houdini

Formerly known as the Houdini Historical Center, the History Museum at the Castle is situated right next to the Lawrence University campus on the corner of College Avenue and Drew Street. The most popular exhibit in the museum features the internationally renowned magician and escape artist Harry Houdini, who grew up in Appleton as a young boy. The...

  • The Fox River Mall

Its bigger than your local Mall, and a whole lot less annoying than the Mall of America in the next State over! Its got over 180 Stores and if youre hungry and cant agree with your compadres on what to eat, the Northwoods Cafe' has got that covered. Its also got a really nice micro-brewry.....

Appleton Restaurants

  • Tons of great food

This restaurant is amazing!!! Every dish was home made and full of flavor. The portion sizes are huge! And the prices are excellent. There is a deal where you get a bottle of wine, appetizer, soup and salad, any pasta dish and dessert for only $40 for 2 people. We ended up bringing home more food than we ate!Plus its a great environment - great for...

  • OLD BAVARIAN is outstanding!

It is family owned and a quiet pleasant place to enjoy a leisurely meal. Mostly it featuresauthentic German cooking from the old country, but there is a nice variety to the menu. Prices are reasonable too for fine dining. They brew a variety of their own beers and those are definitely worht a try. EVERYTHING IS EXCELLENT! I have never had a bad...

  • Bistro and bar overlooking the Fox River

On an icy December day, my friend Dmitri took me for a nice lunch at Fratello's, just south of downtown Appleton overlooking the Fox River. The restaurant is part of what was once a bustling paper factory, and it enjoys dramatic views over a section of the river that is both broad and tumultuous. Someone with deep pockets poured a million or two...

  • Asian Fusion close to the highway

I love this place - an Asian-fusion bistro close to the highway (easy-on, easy off for when I'm just passing through) with good service and fresh food. No "chinese restaurant cliches" in the interior - instead, an upscale "casually elegant design" makes eating here a pleasant. A few of my friends from the area have told me that "it's not authentic"...

  • Powered by Pastrami

This independent restaurant has all the makings of a great place for lunch, dinner and even business meetings! The atmosphere is upscale industrial, the flavors truely East Coast with the Boar's Head Meats and service like it should be, quick, casual and heartfelt. These people know how to treat their quests. Flavorful sandwiches, hearty portions...

  • Unbelievable portions

This is the best Italian restaurant in Appleton. With generous portions and great tasting food for a very good price. You won't leave this place hungry! Plenty of selection and great atmosphere. They have a wonderful item for two called the fantastic seven. You get a bottle of wine, bread, and each person receives an appetiser, salad, soup, a...

Appleton Nightlife

  • Peabody's Sunday Night Jazz Jam

If you can stay up late on a Sunday Night and enjoy live jazz, Peabody's in Oshkosh has some great music. THE JAZZ ORGY is theanchor group, featuring extremely talented musicians and guests who frequently have ties to Lawrence University's and UWO's excellent music programs. Good musicians are usually welcome to sit in and play a few tunes....

  • Shark's

I was very disappointed with the management there. I went there with my boyfriend the evening of March 3, 2007 to shoot some pool. We were having a great time and we got hungry and wanting a snack. We went up to the bar and decided we wanted onion rings. We were waiting for quite a while before we received any "service". Two bartenders were busy...

  • Billiards or pool hall

Its a great place to hang out and play some pool. The bartenders and staff are very friendly and may even strike up a conversation with you. The regulars there are easy to get along with and in the 2 years ive been going there ive only heard of one fight that went by so quick that even though i was 10 feet away from where it was going on i didnt...

Appleton Transportation

  • Valley Transit

The Valley Transit buses run within the Fox Cities. Buses run hourly so it is rather inconvenient if you miss your bus. There is no bus service on Sundays. All buses have bike racks on the front. You must be trained and certified (for a fee of $2.00) to use the bike racks on the buses. All in all, you would be better off driving than relying on...

  • Appleton Airport

Appleton's airport is convenient and modern, offering regular air service to a number of major hubs around the Midwest and South.

  • Highway 41 and 441

Highway 41 circles Appleton on the outer edge on the west side and north side and has 6 exits into Appleton. Highway 441 is fairly new and circles Appleton on the outer edge on the south side and east side. 441 is really like a highway that penetrates the city. There is alot being built up around the new 441, especially to the east side.

Appleton Shopping

  • Great discounts on name brands

There are great bargains on discontinued or overstocked name brands within the Prime Outlets Mall in Oshkosh. Some of the key names include Eddie Bauer, Wilson Leather,Corningware, and Adidas. Although you still have to know what you are looking for, and NOT EVERYTHING is exactly a bargain, there are many great savings to be found. I purchased a...

  • A bit of Everything

For a medium-medium/small metro area, Fox River Mall is still fairly impressive. You will find everything from fine leather goods to great coffee and special gifts. Most of the well known midwestern or national chains are housed here or in the perimeter of the mall area.

  • Fox River Mall

Newly renovated mall built about 20 years ago just to the west of highway 41. Great place to get a bite to eat and plenty of activity as many people in the area find it fun to just go here during the bad weather. Cheesehead hats, Packer stuff, discount clothing.

    1.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

If you would like a drink of water, do not ask directions to the nearest 'water fountain.' Ask where you can find the 'bubbler.' It is one in the same, but here in Wisconsin, 'bubbler' is the only word option.

Appleton Warnings and Dangers

  • Not many, but.....

.....if I were a female, I would probably avoid being in the parking ramps at night alone.Aside from that, don't speed in Appleton, Neenah, Menasha or Oshkosh. If it says 30 and you are doing 35 you're right on the borderline for a ticket. Same thing goes for drunken driving. Don't be stupid in Appleton, Oshkosh or any of the Fox Cities. If you...

  • Surrounding area cops and odd laws

Appleton's cops are pretty decent, but if you leave the city limits.... watch your speed, theyre pretty unforgiving. Also just a couple of parking tips... it is very likely that you will get a ticket in Appletons city limits if youre parked on the street from 2AM to 5AM... you've been warned, and just in case there is a rookie cop patroling the...

  • Interesting to photograph

There are interesting mixes of industry and nature that tell little stories. Here are some photos from around the Fox Cities. Thereare many areas where little parks and heavy industry seem to coexist very well.

Appleton Sports & Outdoors

  • Minor league baseball

    by pumpkin915 Written Apr 16, 2003

The Timberrattlers are a minor league baseball team. The stadium is pretty new and is located north of Wisconsin Ave just west of highway 41. Great place to catch a somewhat professional baseball game. Lots of fun for the family.

Appleton Favorites

  • A Word of Thanks

Speaking at the teachers' conference in Paper Valley conference hall. No matter how nervous I felt, it was necessary to address the audience after listening to numerous reports of other participants. I was very thankful to the organizers and wished my American colleagues good luck and success in all their endeavors.

  • Small college town

I grew up in Neenah, WI just 5 miles south of Appleton. I left the area for college when I was 17 and then permanently moved away when I turned 23. I moved back to the area 9 years later and now I appreciate the Fox Cities more than before. Just getting to know people and becoming friends.
