South Shore Brewery: A Great Place to Dine in Ashland
I had noted this place from other travelers on the forum and I must agree that this is an
excellent local restaurant/ale house. The microbrews were certainly respectable and the food was fantastic and reasonably priced for a hungry tourist who had just finished
a hike at Copper Falls State Park. The service was friendly and they have both non-smoking and smoking areas, depending on your needs.
Favorite Dish: When I was there, they offered a special Prime Rib Tips over Pasta Noodles Concoction
which blew me away. It was seasoned with care and I savored every bite.
South Shore Brewery and Deepwater Grille: Good Brewpub and Grill
The South Shore Brewery and Deepwater Grille is actually _one_ establishment that shares a handsomely restored building near the end of Ashland's main drag. There are a variety of fresh-brewed beers on tap; I enjoyed a smooth and hoppy I.P.A. Very promising! There is also an extensive menu that features a broad variety of sandwiches, salads, and seafood, as well as the requistite "burger n fries". My barbecue pork ribs were meaty, tender and picquant. This would be an excellent place to stop if you are driving between Duluth and Marquette!

The Black Cat Coffeehouse: Sophisticated cafe and lunchspot
Good healthy food, strong organic coffee, whole-grain munchies and literature from a vegetarian-anarchist-environmentalist perspective: by looking around the Black Cat, you can tell that Ashland is home to a pretty good liberal arts college, Northland College.

The Depot and The Hotel...
The Depot and The Hotel Chequamegon. They serve the best food you've ever eaten in the United States I think. They are reasonably priced and the locations are a perfect view of Lake Superior.
The Depot is extremely exquisite (decorated with the finest architectural taste) and the Hotel Chequamegon is located on the lake front. You can eat dinner on the deck and overlook Lake Superior. They are both very elegant and luxurious places to dine that you will never forget. The prices are reasonable, the atmosphere is friendly, they usually have entertainment in one part of the restaurant, live jazz bands, etc.
Favorite Dish: At the Depot my favorite menu item is the Prime Rib. At the Chequamegon Hotel it's the seafood (fresh lake trout, walleye, perch) and the filet mignon. Excellent food.
