Tom's Burned Down Bar: Wise Advice

by yooperprof Updated Jul 1, 2005
    a word from the management

"No serious tourist should be able to sleep at night until they've drunk in the beauty of Tom's Burned Down Cafe."

You never know who you're going to meet at Tom's: descendents of the original creole settlers of the island, leather clad bikers from the Twin Cities, youthful viola players from the Madeline Island music camp, perky Bulgarian waitresses who are working at nearby restaurants, retired R.V.-ers from Indiana, bankers from "out east" who summer on the island, etc.

Tom's Burned Down Bar: Laid back and irreverent

by yooperprof Updated Sep 5, 2004
life's a circus and Tom is the M.C.

The story I heard goes like this. Tom used to have his bar in a building on this site. About ten years ago, there was a fire that destroyed the bar. Tom's never gotten around the actually rebuilding the place; instead, his business now operates out of a tent. The bar is open for the warmer months of the year - the season extended by "fireplaces" scattered around the site. When it rains, some people get wet - but generally the canvas keeps most people dry and happy.

I also heard that the resident population of the island is divided about Tom's Burned Down Bar. About half of the people think that it's an eyesore and a nuisance and a fire hazard. The other half are regulars here. It's a popular place with both permanent people and the summer folk. I loved it - Tom's reminded me of places in Key West.

    Occasional live music.

    Beach Club: Waterfront Bar

Nice operation - easy on the eyes. Clean, well-managed, comfortable - great location. The closest bar to the ferry dock, a few outdoor tables, and nice views (through tinted glass) of the lake.
