Lotta's: Best restaurant on the island?

by yooperprof Written Jul 2, 2005
    a whole lotta good eating

I don't _really_ know if Lotta's is the best restaurant on Madeline Island, but I'd have to aver that it is the best restaurant I've experienced. The service was warm and professional, and I loved sitting out on the screened-in porch in the gloaming. And the food was the best I've had in many a month. I had one of the specials of the day - a preparation of fresh salmon in a puff pastry shell, with a cream-based sauce with leeks and spinach. Nice wine list, too.

You'll pay for it. This seems to be the most expensive restaurant on the island. But prices are in line with what you might expect to pay at a similar establishment in the Twin Cities. No dress code - "island casual" is fine.

Bell Street Tavern: More fine dining

by yooperprof Written Jul 2, 2005
no peanuts on the floor here

The Bell Street Tavern is another excellent dining choice in La Pointe. Beautiful interior, with a lush bar and elegant dining room. It's a little more "dressy casual" than some of the other places on Madeline - you might feel out of place here in shorts and a tee. Wide ranging and ambitious menu that focuses on seafood.

When I dined here, I ordered the shrimp pasta - it's a regular item. The pasta was well cooked, the shrimp was generously large, but the dish was a little lacking in flavor.

    Grampa Tony's: Pizza and Eggs

by yooperprof Written Jul 3, 2005
    an eggscellent location?

Grampa Tony's is the main pizza place on Madeline Island. (I'm told they also have good ice cream.) I haven't had a pizza pie there yet, but I did go there with my friends for breakfast - eggs and such - and it was very good.

The Pub: Casual restaurant with well-prepared food

The Pub was a nice place for a casual but upscale meal on the Island. Burgers, chicken, pasta, and fresh whitefish are all on the menu. Ask for a window-side tables - summer sunsets over the bay are spectacular.
