The cemetery at St. Joseph's is quite old for this region. There are graves here that date back to the 1830s.

a little white church on the island

This building dates from 1901, but the parish was originally founded by Father Frederic Baraga, "the Snowshoe Priest." Baraga was originally from Slovenia, and traveled extensively through the northwoods in his missionary efforts.

Check out my VT page for Baraga MI to see the "shrine" dedicated to his memory. Fr. Baraga is currently being considered for canonization within the Catholic Church.

    Madeline Island Museum

    behind the stockade

The museum is located on the site of the historic fort, a symbol of the European presence here and of the significance of the fur trade to economic and cultural interests throughout the region. Madeline Island has a rich and multi-cultural history, as its French, British, and Native Americans inhabitants all intermingled and intermarried over the course of its development.
