 | Madison Restaurants | Tips 61 - 70 of 79 | | Great little family run Thai/Lao food restaurant. Small neighborhood place that is somewhat affordable. Great little place to escape on a cold winter day. The spicy soups will warm you up on a cold day.
Any of the lomein noodle dishes are great! Recommend the tea and sweatened coffee also. No dish more that 12 dollars. Leave a Comment Theme: LocalPrice: US$11-20 » Currency ConverterComparison: less expensive than averageAddress: 626 S Park St, Madison, WI 53715Phone: (608) 257-2613

This restaurant is above State street. The food and service was very good. It shuts at 10pm.
I had a bento box which cosisted of mixed tempura (carrot, broccoli, asparagus, shrimp, onion), chicken terriyaki, salmon terriyaki, sea weed, 5 sushi rolls, rice, wasabi and pickled ginger. It was accompanied by a bowl of soup too. The cost was 20 dollars. Delicous food. This restaurant has the perfect atmosphere for the eclectic crowd that gathers in Madison. It's a small local restaurant that is always packed. If you go on a Friday or Saturday night expect a wait, but don't get discouraged... just grab a drink from the bar and do some great people watching. There is a bar (serving every kind of drink imaginable), a slew of round tables, a closet with board games, and a tight-knit friendly atmosphere. There is an extremely small stage in which I am told local bands play (although I've never been there during a show). The food is very eclectic and boasts unique menu items (some standards with a crazy twist as well). The menu is fairly small, but everyone should be able to find something here. They have appetizer plates (chips, guacamole, salsa, and pickled vegetables... yum, etc). Unique sandwiches and some great soup. The only downside is that on a busy night the service is fairly slow, but hopefully you're enjoying the atmosphere and conversation so much that it's not that noticeable!
Love the Mexican appetizer plate (didn't think I liked pickled veggies, but it turns out I do)... great homemade guacamole. The Asian soup (can't remember the name of it) is to die for (and that's coming from someone who isn't a huge tofu fan!) The sandwiches are all excellent and I love the twists that they incorporate. Best coffee in town. Get an expresso to prove it to yourself! They are an artisan coffee roaster. Don't worry their coffee is much better than the burnt crap up the road at Starbucks. At each of their locations in Madison Ancroa has at least a couple comfortable couches or chairs. Of course, the coffee will taste just as good on the go...

Williamson Street is the restaurant row of Madison's eastside. The problem is there's so much to choose from, especially for the visitor who comes from culinary Antarctica (me). Should we try Indonesian? How about Laotian? Good Thai food is one of the joys of existence, and it's found in abundance at "Bahn Thai." I particularly recommend the red chicken curry with squash - just the perfect mix of "hot" and "tang." One of the very best thai dishes I've ever had. This is a locally owned coffee house where they roast their own beans. The coffee is brewed so you can enjoy it at a nice hot but not too hot temperature. For people not into coffee they have the best line of looseleaf tea or can make you a cup of godiva hot chocolate. What made this my home away from home were the people. The owners were always friendly and the servers were pleasant, and fast with a quick smile. Several big cushy couches/chairs were around for you to kick back and enjoy your sips. Pleasant music always played in the background...go ahead and request something. The decor was special to EVP. Local artists were featured on the walls. Children's book and toys were in wicker bins. Antique coffee grinders were placced in the windowsill. If you look up above the counter you'll see what inspired the name "EVP"...a rowing oar. EVP stands for "Etes-Vous Prets?!" (pronounced "et-voo-pray") and means "Are you ready?!" It is the traditional starting command of rowing races.

This is really a fun place you can take your whole family to. It has an authentic German Rathskeller atmosphere, and a decent variety of German beers on tap. Also has lots and lots of bottles, but I prefer the tap stuff myself. The food is usually good...I go there fairly regularly and it is possible to have a less-than-stellar meal, but it rarely happens. Essen Haus is part of a complex of 3 bars...you can go to all three without ever having to venture outside, which is quite a nice feature with our winters. They have an outdoor deck one can dine on in the summer, as do the other two establishments. The other two have different types of atmospheres and different sorts of beers, so you can get an awful lot of variety here.
Stick to the beer for the best time! Leave a Comment

I really liked the layout and design of this restaurant. Tequila on tap? Hmmm.....be careful with the tequila! Had the blue margarita, FANTASTIC! Put plenty of alchohol in it and it just tasted really good. Restaurant is named after Frida a famous Mexican painter who died in 1954, we still do not understand the unibrows on the woman who was in the paintings? If someone can explain to me it would be great, the woman in the paintings looks really angry with her unibrow. Staff was nice, they seemed a little snobbish and pretentious for a Mexican restaurant.
I had the pulled pork soft shell tacos with rice and beans and was quite satisfied with my meal, very flavorful. I also had the Blue House Margarita $5. My taco dinner was $10.95. Hong Kong Cafe has two branches in Madison, my favorite has to be the west-side branch, located on a strip mall that houses Pier 1 Imports, just off West Towne Mall. The restaurant was never busy and service from the Malaysian waiter is very attentive and friendly. The food gets served very quickly and most of them, if not all, is delicious. HK Cafe even do deliveries.
dried pepper fried squid (not on the menu, but ask for it anyway) and sesame beef.
