Farmers market...overrated

  • The Farmers market is an overrated journey to capital square. The food is overpriced (I think for the novelty of it going bad in your bag in the hot summer sun) and the place is always crowded with people who are somehow in a hurry to go in a circle.

To be honest there were only 3 vendors worth visiting...and one has passed away. Hook's cheeses have AWESOME cheddar. Fountain Prairie Inn & Farms is an excellent place for fresh meat. Sadly, the hot pepper vendor passed away this fall.

Goto the arb, ride a bike, walk picnic point...just avoid the market.

I must admit that Frank Lloyd Wright's Monona Terrace is a *very nice* addition to Madison's lakefront, and is well worth seeing (on the outside) if you are en route to somewhere else (rollerblading around the lake). However, the inside of the building is very disappointing, not giving a true feel of a Wright interior (which I imagine would not lend well anyway to a utilitarian building like this). The inside feels like a Ramada convention center, and the carpet is a hideous orange...

  • Every Halloween, tens of thousands of students drunkenly stumble into Madison for a weekend of revelry and, in the past, rioting (usually out-of-towners make up nearly all of the arrests that happen). Halloween is generally a let-down for people and is certainly not the best view of Madison.

If you have to go, don't cause trouble, don't destroy things, don't fight etc...

and...WEAR A COSTUME! Everyone wears costumes and those who don't look incredibly lame.

Come on a normal weekend to get an actual feel for the city.

    There was life before Starbucks

  • State St. is the pedestrian mall that has unfortunately lost some of its charm when allowing such chains as the Gap and Starbucks to encroach onto what used to be ma and pop establishments.

Starbucks is strategically located at the top of State St. and one would be tempted to dive in for some much needed java before making the trek down State.

Support the local coffeehouses - they are way cooler, cheaper and have so much more character (sure to find an open mic, pick up a game of cribbage, hear some great local music playing or just enjoy great people watching).
