Nothing like spending a nice, warm sunny summer lunch down at the library mall on campus than to have it ruined by The Orange Guy and his flute. Seriously. He plays that thing over and over and over until it drives you nuts. How many times can you hear the theme from The Flintstones until it drives you bonkers.

Madison is a very safe city...

  • Madison is a very safe city for it's size, and common sense is all you need to have a fun, safe trip. Of course, if you like brawls, try picking a fight on State Street when the bars let out at 2AM.

College Towns can get a bit wild

  • Because Madison is a huge college town, most nights drunk college kids can be seen roaming the streets. There are a certain days that Madison get a bit wilder than normal, so if that's not your thing or you are planning on bringing the family for a nice visit to the capitol you may want to avoid them. These include:
Football game days- Depending on what time the game starts, some students will start drinking at 8 AM, certain streets have beer bongs hanging from the 2nd and 3rd stories, people will be drunk. You shouldn't get harrassed or anything but wear red to be safe. I have friends who came with their families when they were little and loved it but it all depends on your perspective.
Halloween-It is insane, although the mornings and early afternoon would be pretty empty (everyone's sleeping off the night before) Stay away from State Street at night unless you want to join in the festivities. And then, WEAR A COSTUME!!
Mifflin Street Block Party-generally the first weekend of May, this Saturday party starts early in the morning and goes until whenever people cash out. The students are generally concentrated on Mifflin until 4ish, when they roam the city to look for places to eat and nap.

  • Dangerous on your wallet... METER MAIDS. They are VULTURES. Beware of the white Jeeps with the Madison Police logo on the side... Make sure you bring PLENTY of change for the parking meters if you go downtown on the UW Campus or anywhere around State Street

  • In a previous tip, it is stated Madison is safe. It is. However, always be sure to use common sense. Stay with a friend, especially after dark. Recently there have been a few incidents of robberies. Guys, they hit you, too. But this is very rare, downtown at night. I wouldn't let it affect my plans except to take the same precaustions you take everywhere else.

  • They are hard to find in this town... But beware of the Republicans that may try to infiltrate this very Liberal, Democrat run city...
