Painted Cows of?@New Glarus
For some reason I don't know, New Glarus has decorated the town with painted cows. I like this one, despite the nazi-like sign declaring you can't touch it. If it is so damned valuable, why do they leave it out in the rain? The Swiss cross on its forhead is cute.Related to:

Visited Folklore Village where various events of the arty kind are held. Nothing was going on at the time so we talked to the proprietor for a long while and checked out the rag rug weaving loom which was set up.
Alpacas or Llamas
When you drive through Wisconsin, you always find the oddest things in the oddest places. This picture was taken a little west of Mount Hebron, and features a herd of alpacas or llamas (OK, I don't know the difference, I'm not Peruvian, so sue me) that seemed as eager to look at us as we were to look at them.
Dickeyville Grotto!There are...
There are 'grotto's--gemstone-encrusted stone buildings or villages--all over the Midwest! You'd be surprised! The Dickeyville Grotto is a little bitty one that we found while getting lost on the way from Iowa to Illinois (Please note: Wisconsin is NOT on the way between these two states:)). It's really cute and it was free to wander around and look at the really intricate stone designs:) Highly recommended as a rest stop!

There is a great trail located close to the university in Eau Claire. The paths and trail's are in great condition and you can walk for miles. There is a beautifull rock that overhangs the river. Hundreds of people have carved there name on it. It was a very relaxing spot. This pic is of part of the rock.

Petit National Ice Center--This is the Olympic training center for speed skating. Perhaps that is because at one point the entire US Speed Skating team was from Wisconsin! I actually skated with Dan Jansen (Olympic gold medalist for those of you who didn't know) when I was like 12. It is open to the public, and is the best skating facility I have skated in.

ROOT RIVER PARKWAY--this is a 76-mile paved bike course that really lets you see southeast Wisconsin. My favorite stretch is the part that goes through Whitnall Park, which has to be one of the biggest parks I have been to...Greenfield Park is nice to--I used to ice skate and swim there as a kid.
HARLEY DAVIDSON ANNIVERSARY...
HARLEY DAVIDSON ANNIVERSARY RIDE--well so the last one was the 95th in 1998--so just wait til 2003 this is going to be BIG and Milwaukee is THE PLACE TO BE for it cause Wisconsin is the birthplace of Harley Davidson--if you can't make it for the anniversary, take a tour!
THe Balloon Festival--it is...
THe Balloon Festival--it is held every spring around the end of May/early June near Baraboo, Wisconsin. We used to go every year after camping at Devil's Lake. There are hundreds of hot air balloons from all over that the sky is literally crowded with them. Amazing site and a great event to take the kids to. My father, the practicing photographer, took this picture.

For the nature lover. Check out the Nickolet National Forest. Located along Hwy 32 in the northern part of the state. I recomend between Hwy 64 and Hwy 52.
The small towns of Lakewood and Townsend offer local hospitality, crafts, go-carting, ATV or snowmobile rentals (for the back trails; RECOMENDED!!) and cabins for weekly rent. If your planning a visit, you can E-mail me at Drrodder@bigfoot.com for more information or visit my Wisconsin web site http://drive.to/brewcityrods

Many people don't realize that Wisconsin has many beautiful beaches. One of my favorites is near Superior along the southern shore of Lake Superior. I love to walk along the shore or just sit on the beach and listen to the waves crash against the rocks.
The charming town of Algoma
Whenever I'm going to or from Door County I like to stop in Algoma for two things. first, there is a place called Bearcats that smokes fish and sells it from a deli counter. They do it up right and the fish remains moist with a light coat outside, full of flavor without any trace of chemicals or artificial smoke. Second, there is a winery in town named Von Stiehl's and it is actually a very good one. Founded by a doctor over forty years ago they've gotten quite good and have never entirely done away with wrapping their bottles in cast material. They hire pretty girls for the counter, have nice wines, have a shady seating and rest area on the riverfront, sometimes with music or food pairings and just generally run a nice establishment. I like the fume` and meritage but everything is good including the wide range of fruit wines. The building is also a historic registry site.Related to:

Door County - Ellison Bay scenic lookout
South of Ellison Bay, about two miles off of Hwy 42, half of it through the forest, you come to a small county park that has a scenic lookout over the shore of Lake Michigan. Stone bluffs and forested lake shore make for some fine views and there is a limited picnic area if you want to avoid eating out.Related to:

Six Flags Great America
This is actually located in Gurnee, IL but is an easy hour drive from Milwaukee, making Six Flags a very popular spot to visit in the summer. This is the mother of all theme parks! There are rides for everyone here huge huge roller coasters, thrill rides, water rides, kids rides, etc
We use to go here every summer as a kid, as a matter of fact this is where I went on my "first date" with my husband. When he said he didn't like the wooden roller coaster "american eagle" I knew we would work together :-)Related to:

For those who like adventure, during the summer there is rafting on the wolf river in Waupaca County. Most is lesiurely paddle, but there are some exciting rapids also. One area has a 10 foot water fall that will knock you out into the cool water. Where some good sunscreen and bug repelent.
