    Afton

by Basaic Written Jul 24, 2015

Afton is a very pretty small town of just under 2000 (up 7% since 2000) located along U.S. Highway 89 in Lincoln County in Western Wyoming near the border with Idaho. Afton is located in a beautiful area of the Bridger-Teton National Forest along the Salt River Mountain Range. Afton was founded by Mormon Settlers traversing the Lander cutoff of the Oregon Trail in 1885. The Mormon Settlers found the beautiful and fertile land in the Starr Valley very inviting. I could see why! Afton is also home to the world's largest elk horn arch. The arch stretches 75 feet (23 meters) across 4 lanes of U.S. Highway 89, and consists of 3011 antlers weighing a whopping 15 tons.

    Periodic Spring

If you're visiting Afton, or just passing through, I highly recommend the drive/hike to Afton's periodic spring. This cold water geyser periodically "erupts" (actually, it flows out of the side of a mountain on a periodic basis).

    Hegg's Grill: Nice Family Place

by Basaic Written Jul 24, 2015

$15 as of May 2015. This is one of those small town places where almost all the customers are locals and everyone knows each other’s name. Although I was a stranger the staff made me feel welcome. Comfortable, casual atmosphere. Hours are 7 AM to 8 PM Monday through Saturday and 7 AM to 3 PM on Sunday.

Favorite Dish: Meatloaf and Chicken Noodle Soup.
