    Wyoming State Capitol

This is the state capitol building in Cheyenne. Inside is very pretty. It has a black and white checkerboard tile floor. Tours are available, admission is free. Also check out the senate and house chambers...they are very pretty. The inside dome is pretty, but small.

Buffalo Country - Once Upon a Time

    Wyoming State Capitol lawn, Cheyenne

Along with the broncobuster on the back side, which itself forms the state's symbol, graces all its border crossings, and figures on its car tags, the buffalo on the side lawn forms another one of Wyoming's legacies. Most of the buffaloes you will see in this state figure in the northwest corner near and within Yellowstone NP.

    under the dome

The interior beneath the golden dome is less impressive than some capitol interiors, but the features inside are unique among state houses. The central hall and the upstairs walkways are checkered like something out of a barber shop. All three floors are accessible for inspection. A full-size statue of Arapaho chief Washakie stands in the central hall, while the right wing offers a large size replica of a bison and a huge bust of Abraham Lincoln. Otherwise the banisters and edge work are done in wood, properly suited to this enjoyable frontier capital.

    State Capitol Building, Cheyenne

The State Capitol building in Cheyenne is among my favorite buildings in America. Built in the late 1880s, the golden dome caps an elegant if not ornate building in our least populous state. The capitol grounds are adorned with a number of statues and a war memorial, with the famous broncobuster (the state emblem) on the back lawn. Situated at the head of Capitol Avenue, the state house enjoys the most prominent position in town, and is easily identifiable when approaching on I-25 from the south.

    St Mary's Cathedral, Cheyenne, WY

St Mary's Cathedral rightfully deserves a listing for state historic sites. Built in 1907, its interior preserves stained glass windows in a fairly darkened setting, but by far its greatest asset is its outward architecture.

    backside, Wyoming state capitol building

The state capitol buildings in all the states generally display the noblest and most elegant architecture on a civic level in the entire state. For poor states and rich alike, the resources of the entire legislature and constituency are normally involved in gathering materials and procuring the artisans and artists to produce the proudest public edifice the state can boast without facing criticism for over-opulence and over-spending. All our capitol buildings were generally finished long ago. They represent each new state's pride and ambition in joining the Union.

If you enjoy scenery you'll want to drive out to Medicine Bow National Forrest and take in the Vedauwoo Recreation Area. It was plenty hot and dusty while I was there in June.
The natural rock formations are very unique and if you want to climb them and are prepared to do so it looks like quite a challange.

Yellowstone National Park - Much evidence still exists of the fire that destroyed so much of the southern part of the forest, but the drive is well worth the time.
