While the summer season is by far the busiest time of the year at Devils Tower there is one time where it is ungodly miserable. That is when the big Motorcycle Rally is taking place in Sturgis, South Dakota. Then litterally hundreds of big and noisy motorcycles descend on the monument.
Now I have nothing with motorcycle riders per se. However when in the solitude of a national park or monument the noise makes for an intolerable situation.
The next rally is scheduled for August 6 to August 12 of 2012 and according to the locals I spoke to both the week before and a few days after can be pretty noisy at the monument.

Rattle snakes are found in the area. There are a lot of hiding places in the rocks. Stay on the trails unless you know what to look for and how to respond. Most common bites are from people who step on the snake by accident. The second most common way to get bit is to ignore the rattle and annoy the snake. The good news, approximately 30% of the bites are "dry" bites which means no venom is injected. Still not good enough odds for me.
