 | Jackson Things To Do | Tips 31 - 40 of 73 | | Popular Things To Do | Other Things To Do Tips | All Tips (73) When you have a few hours left, it is not a bad idea to walk in the few streets of “the old centre” of Jackson. The generally bright coloured painted wooden houses are but in the same style, but each is different and the have a sort of a personality. Some are just boards adjusted like long tiles, others are more decorated with balconies, carved pillars; big windows, small windows, two storeys or only one level. . . there is a play house-theatre saloons, shops. . . The thing is to project 100 years ago and imagine the ambiance and people at that time, the horses on the streets, probably the guys with guns on their waists, the strictly clothed women going to the grocery or other shops. . . Yes walking quietly on these streets makes dream a little bit. Directions: Around the town square

The local boy scouts of Jackson gather antlers each sprig in the National Elk refuge and the antlers are sold on auction; in 1960 the local Rotary club (another of those clubs. . . ) purchased the antlers and decided to decorate the city with these arches. Don’t try to remove a piece of them it could cost you 750$! Ah, cow boy and Wild West artistic taste! Once you walked trough one of the arches you are in a small park, with big trees, benches and a few statues (Wild West again!); it is good to have a rest there, looking at people, planning for the next day, in a very quiet place, despite in the centre of this small city. In Autumn, the yellow aspen leaves decorate the wooden alleys and the lawns. Directions: City square in the old town.

Enter the George Washington Memorial Park, the Town Square, via the four corners, where huge elk antlers shape an archway entrance. So many antlers are intertwined to form each archway that you cannot count them. It can be a grim scene but remember that these antlers are from the past and the elk that they came from fed and clothed the pioneers. Benches and Statues are located along the paths through the park with the Stagecoach Depot on one corner. After shopping some of the boutiques and stores surrounding the square, it is a nice place to sit back and relax and take in the beauty of the area. Now you can head for the nearest bar or restaurant, chill out, fill up, and start the shopping again. Yahoo! Jackson Hole was a name given to the town of Jackson ( named for Davey Jackson, the fur trapper in the early 1800's) by the fur trappers in the 1820's for the valley that is surrounded by the mountains with the Grand Tetons to the west. A short distance to Yellowstone National Park makes Jackson Hole a great road trip stop, and the view of the Grand Tetons on the way to Yellowstone, makes a photo stop a must. But, what makes you want to stop and stay awhile in Jackson Hole. Well, the flair of the old west still thrives in this much sought after vacation spot and tourist destination. One of the delights in town is the "Stagecoach Ride" that round trips the center of town via the Town Square Stagecoach Depot. Climb aboard the ladder steps to enter the cab of the stagecoach and sit down on the leather seats, right out of the "Old West". As the driver, who sits outside, above the cab, gives out a yell to the horses that pull the coach, you get this rush of nostalgia and the inner peace that this mode of transportation gives one. Looking out the windows to the stores, cars, and the people milling around brings you back to reality and the twenty-first century, but you still have that big grin that comes the fact that you're inside, riding the old west stagecoach. Giggy-up!!! Leave a Comment Address: Town Square of Jackson Hole, WyomingDirections: Center of town, northeast corner of Broadway and Cache Streets.

For the enjoyment of tourists (and art dealers) there are plenty of art galleries in Jackson. I already wrote it is not exactly my taste, but people keen on western or wildlife art will find lots of choice in these galleries; some specialise in wildlife, other in landscape paintings, there is even a “modern sculptures” gallery. On East Broadway an artist displays his work outside, in a garden, and it is an open air gallery with a news papers vendor, walking men and women, geometrical forms, . . . have a look. A bronze fisherman, a wooden bear family, a bronze monumental moose, everything is there. . . Ah, I did not inquire if they may ship a 2 tons sculpture to the East coast or to Europe. . . . .and how much it may cost. . . .! Directions: In the old town on all sides around the central square and a bit further.

I took my time, driving in the Park and made some detours here and there, following indications of the map I was given at the entrance of the Park. At Moose Junction, I took the road left to go to Jenny Lake (There are boat tours or shuttles for water falls on the western side of the lake; I did not go there), and have a short walk along the shore. Then, I drove to Jackson lake, walked along the shore, made photographs of the aspen, looked at the mountains on the other side of the lake, dreamt and gazed around, then I drove north to Yellowstone National Park. There are many trails in the Teton, and there are a few crossing the mountain via high passes; I had already plans for the Wind River, but I think about an autumn (Indian summer) trek there if I happen to come back. There are three visitors information centers in the park, an Indian art museum (I did not visit), lodges, marinas, camping grounds. . . well, choice for the visitors. Too much for my taste, but, all sorts of tourists can find something to their taste, it seems. Address: North of Jackson
