Just a twelve mile ride and you are at the base of a beautiful and unusual mountain. This isolated mountain gives panoramic views in all four directions. The trailhead is at the Heart Mountain Ranch, which is run by the Nature Conservancy. Four miles and 2000 feet should have you at the top. A beautiful hike through sage and pine. Check out the Ranch web site for good fotos and info.

The Powell valley has many miles of paved secondary roads that have little to no traffic, great for your road bike. There are also many dirt roads for the mountain bikers. Stop by Larsen’s bike shop for all your biking needs. Nick Coy will keep your bike in great shape. He also knows all the best rides in and around Powell and has lots of stories to share.

Play the front nine, as you climb a badlands hillside for a wonderful view of the Powell valley and finish the back nine among the trees of an older style course. Pro shop and bar at clubhouse.

Not much to see here, it’s more of a place to feel. Imagine being arrested, allowed to take only a few of your possessions and shipped of to a distant unknown place. Each family was placed in a single room with army cots and a coal burning stove. Bathroom, eating and laundry facilities were all communal. Between August 11, 1942 and November 10, 1944 this “Relocation Center” was the third largest community in Wyoming. Two thirds of the internees were US Citizens. Of the nine guard towers and hundreds of other buildings only one derelict building with large brick chimney remain. There is a small memorial park. A visit to the Homesteader Museum in Powell or www.heartmountain.net would add greatly to your visit of the site.
