Obsidian Dining Room: Another Choice In the Old Faithful Area

The Obsidian Dining Room opened in 1999, and is open for the winter season, as well as the busy summer season. The dining room seats 106 people. One of the advantages to this restaurant, is that no reservations are accepted, so if you had hoped to eat out in one of the nicer restaurants, only to find out that they are filled with reservations made weeks ago, you have a good chance of being able to eat at the Obsidian. The menu offers everything from hamburgers to steaks, bison short ribs, and seafood, The decor is pleasant, with custom built chandeliers to dress up the dining room.

The fire hole Lounge is located just off of the dining room, and is a pleasant place to have a drink, relax, or to wait for a table if you can not get right into the restaurant. This lounge has a fireplace with comfortable chairs around it, so it is especially pleasant in the winter.

If you have a wait time for a table to become available, and do not wish to purchase a drink, there is also a lounging area outside the entrance to the dining room with comfortable chairs to wait in. My second photo shows this sitting area.

Favorite Dish: I absolutely love the bison short ribs! They are so tender, and the sauce is delicious!!!! These are farm-raised, bison, that are braised in Moose Drool ale, and are served with buttermilk-mashed potatoes.

Snowlodge: Classy Decor - Food Hmmmm!

The main restaurant of The Snowlodge at Old Faithful presents itself as an upscale operation with modern decor and professional waiting staff. The menu however, at least that offered on the one lunchtime I was there, left much to be desired.

With an hour plus for lunch before our snowcoach was due to pick us up for the return journey and with the option of the fast food restaurant or the apparrently more formal dining option we plumped for the latter. This was a bit of a dissappointment, if this was supposed to be the flagship operation then I would have hated to see what the other restaurant had to offer.

This is not to say that there was anything wrong with the food, but merely that the menu was limited to the sort of options that I would have expected from a little back street bar, being mostly sandwiches of no particular distinction.

The service however was excellent and a couple of decent beers washed down my corned beef "Rueben".

In its defence: this was the winter season and the park itself was due to close for its spring clean the following week and so perhaps the menu had been purposefully scaled down, but should I ever revisit I will check-out the fast food restaurant first.

Favorite Dish: Obviously no favourite here, but by all accounts they had had a Buffalo steak special with blue cheese that day but had sold out by the time we arrived - about 12.45, such is life :(

Old Faithful Snowlodge: Trout for Breakfast?

The parks lodges, activities & restaurants are run by the company Xanterra at all locations. Surprisingly the food was consistently very good and reasonably priced. Throughout the park, menu items can vary slightly but you will see mostly the same at each of the locations.

Favorite Dish: I had to try the local specialties while visiting Yellowstone and the Tetons. And that included fish for breakfast and quite a hearty portion with poached eggs, potatoes, peppers and mushrooms.

At the Snowlodge there were nightly dinner specials starting at around $12.95. I was very satisfied with all our meals.

At the Lake Yellowstone Hotel some prices are a bit higher and the restaurant is more upscale with table linens and china. But like the rest of the park there is no dress code and jeans and sweatshirts were common.
I tried elk medallions (a specialty at the Lake Lodge) for dinner. It was very good although the elk tastes a little "gamey" which was to be expected.

    one hearty breakfast!

    Only a few choices

by GroovyDoc Written Feb 25, 2003

At Old Faithful Snow Lodge, there's a dining room that serves all your meals, and a Grill (kinda like McDonalds) that is only open when the Lodge is practically full. So, make reservations early on for dinner every night at the dining room or else you may be in a predicament.
