Football in BA is a unique, fascinating and exciting experience. But you need to know and be aware of the "Barras Bravas" Firstly, of course there is the simple fact that Argentinians love their football. Everyone knows that in football, local derby games have the most passion. In Argentina, most of the big teams are based in BA so every day is derby day - so much so that there are games on at different times in the city so you if like me, you love the game you can see 2 games on a sunday. Each club has a "Barras Bravas" and they are basically the thugs. It is not unusual to have organised hooliganism but this is different. Often they have incredibly close links to the clubs and are involved in ticket distribution and various degrees of criminal activity. Club presidents are elected by the supporters hence the Barras Bravas often have a real influence on these elections. They arrive en mass just on kick off, about 2-300 hundred usually and stand behind the home teams goal - DO NOT GET IN THEIR WAY!! During the game, they lead the tempo, sing and chant and really add to the atmosphere but many genuine fans hate them. A recent game between Boca and River saw not only the team bus arriving live on TV but also the busses with the Barras Bravas! I went to 4 games while I was in BA and had no trouble standing in the popular section. Take sensible precuations starting with recognising the Barras Bravas! I have been to 2 world cups, the maracana, Camp Nou and Bernabeau but the atmosphere in BA is special (although doesnt quite have the history and hatred a Celtic-Rangers game does!). If you get the chance to go enjoy it... and come away wondering why all the teams have songs that go to the tune of "Karma Cameleon" (1980s hit in UK) - hilarious. Oh, and when you get back to your hostel, you need to stop singing "la cunch, la cuncha, la cuncha a la tu madre" Enjoy. Theme: Sports Watching

For all football 'nuts', if you're in Buenos Aires do not miss the opportunity to see a football game. The best and biggest team in town are River Plate whose "Cancha" which is the Porteño term for a stadium play at the 'El Monumental' in the Palermo district of the city. Whilst the football at times is less than inspiring the experience of being amongst the barra bravas with their colour and non-stop chanting and jumping up and down is one of exilerance. buy a shirt, wave your scarf and join in with chants to fully make the most out of the experience.
just take your self....and if you want to blend buy a home shirt with scarf and bandana, which can all be purchased in town or at the club shop at teh stadium. Estadio Monumental (River Plate) by pili As you would expect football is a national passion and the capital is home to the countries biggest teams: Boca Juniors and River Plate. Any visit to the city would be complete without witnessing a football match- In the picture you can see the River Plate Stadium: "El Monumental". AGUANTE RIVER!!! Leave a Comment Theme: Other

by Shakermaker Going to a football match (soccer for americans) is something you have to do. Football here is a big passion and the people really add an extra something to the sport. Everyone goes to see Boca, but in my opinion you should see River. River's stadium is nicer and also its located on a better neighbourhood so after or before the game you can explore that area. River Plate Stadium by gueto Soccer (or football as we say) is for Argentinians as important as water for fish. Please, take the time to go to see any soccer match, speacially River Plate vs. Boca Juniors. You'll never feel so much adrenaline like when you are in a match like this.
Go with friends, it could be a bit dangerous if you go alone. Don't panick anyway if you have to be alone, entire families assist to soccer matches but be prudent anyway. LA BOMBONERA, Buenos Aires, Argentina by cadiana88 Boca Juniors stadium, "La Bombonera" (Chocolate box), is the main football temple in Argentina. You must go, see its excellent team and its superb supporters, "La 12" (The player number 12). Boca Juniors is the current (2004) World Champion.
Buy the best tickets, are cheaper than Europa or USA. Outside the Stadium, be careful, don't speak too much in other languages and don't show cameras. Step out before match ends. by JonnyVT Club Atlético River Plate, known also as River Plate or simply River, is an Argentine sports club best known for its football team, established in 1901. Its home base is the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Núñez, and it plays at the Estadio Monumental Antonio Vespucio Liberti. "River Plate" is sometimes used as the English name for the Rio de la Plata, the river on which Buenos Aires sits. It is believed that in the club's early days one of the founders (Martínez) observed sailors playing impromptu football games in the port of Buenos Aires next to crates marked "The River Plate", hence the club name. River fans and the press are fond of the nickname Los Millonarios. This name derives from the 1930s after some expensive transfers of players from other clubs, including Bernabé Ferreyra from Tigre in 1932. In 1979 - 1981, the River squad was reputed to be amongst the most expensive in the world. Fans of rival clubs call River gallinas (literally hens, but more akin to chicken). This nickname was supposedly born in a game against Uruguayan team Peñarol, when River were ahead 2-0 but ended up losing the game 4-2. La Prensa's article (in Spanish) Due to the red band in their jersey, it is also common to refer to River as El Equipo de la Banda Roja (the team with the red band) or simply La Banda (which also means "the band" -both as in "gang" and "musical group"). Some famous River teams earned nicknames, notably La Máquina (the machine), the team that astonished Argentine football between 1941 and 1945. In 1996 and 1997, during a streak of titles (three Argentine titles, one Copa Libertadores and one Supercopa), River were sometimes called La Maquinita ("The Little Machine") by the press. That team featured Francescoli and younger players such as Juan Pablo Sorín, Hernán Crespo, Ariel Ortega, and Marcelo Gallardo. Read up more on their website www.riverplate.com
