Argentinians have been the World Champions in Polo since 1949 till today.
Polo has been played in Argentina since 1870.
Soon it became more popular than the all native game of "Pato", that gauchos used to play since 1610, which is rather similar.
Of the more than 3000 Argentine polo players there are, some of them are internacionally well known belonging to the most traditional families from the countryside, such as Bautista, Horacio, Alberto y Eduardo Heguy, Juan Carlos Harriot, Alfredo Harriot, Adolfo Cambiasso, Enrique Alberdi, Juan A. Traill, Mariano Aguerre, Javier Novillo Astrada .

In Buenos Aires city, at the Campo Argentino de Polo, (Av. del Libertador y Dorrego), the world famous championship: Campeonato Argentino Abierto de Polo is played. The championship begins in August, generally in other fields of the Northern area of the Gran Buenos Aires, finishing by December in Palermo.

In Buenos Aires you can watch the world's best polo players. This sport has a great tradition in Argentina and is mainly viewed and played by the wealthy people. There are playgrounds in Palermo. If you don't mind going a little further outside, go to the Hurlingham Polo Club. Tournaments take place regularly. November & December are the best months to watch. I was lucky enough to see the final in December.
