A 2 cuadras de la Plaza Dorrego los fines de semana Se arma una feria de ropa usada y accesorios, en el cual se pueden encontrar cosas interesantes.

The 2 blocks of Dorrego Square, at the weekends feature a used clothes and
accessory fair, at which you can find many interesting things. It is like one
    giant yard sale.

  • Cathedral and the Eternal Flame of San Martin - Buenos Aires
    Cathedral and the Eternal
    Flame of San Martin
    by mtncorg
Built on the site of an earlier church dating to 1593, the Cathedral, itself, dates to 1752-1852 with a decorative 1911 refurbishment. Outside, the eternal flame of San Martin burns. Inside, the main nave leads to a glorious main altar with floors of Venetian marble. On the left side is the Santo Cristo de Buenos Aires Chapel containing a carving of Jesus dating to 1671. On the right side is the tomb of General Jose de San Martin draped with a huge Argentine flag. San Martin is the nation’s temporal saint – forgotten in his own lifetime by the anarchical Unitarian-Federalist struggles following his successful campaigns in the Wars of Independence. Here, in the Cathedral, Argentina tries to make it up to her hero in a way that outdoes all of those who are over in la Recoleta.

  • El Caminito in La Boca, Buenos Aires, Argentina - Buenos Aires
El Caminito in La Boca, Buenos
    Aires, Argentina
    by jumpingnorman, 2 more photos
I saw pictures of the colored houses in La Boca when I read the travel books, and so I took a taxi to that famed street of El Caminito.
The taxi driver was very kind, but he looked very concerned that I was walking alone. He warned me to just stay where people were since there have been reports of tourists being attacked in the area. I followed his instructions.
In the mid-19th century, La Boca was home to Spanish and Italian immigrants who worked in meat-packing plants and warehouses in the beef-shipping industry. They used leftover paint to color the corrugated metal they used for building their houses. El Caminito, whose name is derived from a Tango song, is the most famous street with these colourful houses. And as expected, you can see tango dancers here and even take a photo or dance with them for a small fee.
Someone then handed me a brochure about a boat ride, and I went to the stall and bought a ticket for the 1PM ride. "Diego" who handed me the brochure was the same person who drove the boat, and unfortunately for the company, I was the only passenger. So, it was like I rented the whole boat all for my own as it set off into the open river!

The day after our San Telmo and Recoleta adventures, we set off again (by Subway this time) for the parklands of the Palermo district. We were not long in reaching our first intended destination, the Jardin Botanico Carlos Thays. This amazing place was designed in 1898 by Carlos Thays, the same French architect who fixed up Plaza de Mayo in front of the Casa Posada. However, in recent years the Botanical Gardens had been abandoned and left to it's fate. That all changed in 2004 when a local group began an effort to rehabilitate the site.

The single large building in the Gardens is an Art Noveau style brick structure which used to hold gardening lessons, a library, a museum and an adjoining greenhouse. However, we could not get a close look at this Historical Monument because of a large wooden fence around the entire structure as it too underwent repairs.

Located next to the Cabildo is the Palacio De Gobierno Buenos Aires. It's quite a beautiful European style building. The Clarin calls the architecture "German-French-Italian" Haha, yep, that about covers it. Designed by Juan Buschiazzo, it was built by Giovanni Cagnoni between 1891 and 1902. In the construction marble, Mosaic and crystal were removed from a house located on Peru Street, expropriated from the Zuberbuhler family.

    Monument to the Two Congresses
    by mtncorg
Built by a Belgian artist and another Belgian archtect, the monument remembers both the 1813 Assembly and the 1816 Tucuman Congress. Allegories prevail throughout the monument: huge granite steps represent the Andes; a huge fountain is the Atlantic; sculpture groups represent the Plata, Uruguay and Parana rivers. The figure atop is the Republic. Grafitti abounds on this monument. The will of the people?

It was the old Ortiz Basualdo place, where Daniel Ortiz Basualdo began work in
1912, with plans by the French architect Pablo Pater.
The plans were changed so that it has four fronts, foreseeing the widening of
the Av. 9 de Julio, the residence was lent to the Prince of Wales and 25 members
of its cortege in 1925 and later it was sold to the French Embassy where it was
inaugurated with a grand ball. It is distinguished its circular body in corner,
with dome and ornament tower, the monumental ionic columns and the wroght
ironwork of the balconies and the gate.

There are several options for visiting Recoleta Cemetery. There are free guided tours, currently at 11 am on Tuesday and Thursday in English. There are paid tours such as the one offered by Tango History Tours, many of the city tours include a stop here or you can do like we did and do a self guided tour. It seemed like a lot of the bus tours were there right about 11 am so this might not be the best time to visit.

Most people will seek out Evita's tomb (look for Family Duarte, not Peron) because she will be the only person buried there that they know. But have a look around at some of the other tombs, works of art created in memory of their loved ones.

The only other person we knew of was Luis Firpo, a heavyweight boxer made famous by his fight with Jack Dempsey, immortalized in a painting by George Bellows. You'll also want to find the tomb for the Paz Family who owned the La Prensa newspaper and the Art Deco tomb that was erected by the mother of Rufina Cambaceres who was buried alive because she was in a coma, subsequently saved by some workers who heard her screaming.

I noticed that a lot of the tombs bore the same names as the streets in Buenos Aires, if you go on a guided tour, surely they would tell you the history behind some of these names.

If you are visiting on a Saturday or Sunday, be sure to check out the Recolata Market nearby. And watch out for all the resident cats, local ladies feed the cats daily and they can be seen darting in and out of the alley ways.
