Mugged. DON'T WALK ALONE
  • Tip Rating:
  • Everything that can happen to a person here -- being overcharged, receiving counterfeit money, etc. -- has happened to me in Buenos Aires within a three week period. This includes being mugged now.

It was around 6 am Sunday morning. Left my friends at Crobar and since it was already daylight and pretty, decided to walk home. I had to cut through a posh looking neighborhood in Palermo to get where I was going.

A man started walking with me. Stupidly I talked to him. When I said I was going in the other direction he kept tagging along. Before I knew it, he had pushed me into the entranceway of an apartment building, tackled me, and choked me into submission. He made me sit next to him and stroke his crotch.

I was crying most of the time and he kept squeezing my throat and threatening to kill me if I yelled or made any more noise. I tried yelling once to a woman across the street and he choked me hard. Cut off my air.

Luckily, the apartment building had security cameras. This is what I'm guessing since a man's voice came on an intercom and told us we couldn't sit there (I think that's what was being said since I am not fluent in Spanish). My attacker said I needed to get up and go with him. I ran when we got to the sidewalk and got away.

This could have been a lot worse. I could have easily been raped. The apartment building might not have security cameras. So all in all, I was lucky. He didn't even take any of my money!

NEVER WALK ALONE on deserted streets. ALWAYS call for a radio taxi. DON'T look people in the eye. Just keep going and keep your mouth shut.

There is a real danger out there. There are 1000 reported rapes a year in Buenos Aires.

I still think it's a great city. Just super dangerous. There is a reason buildings have tons of security.

When walking around Buenos Aires one becomes aware of the carelessness of the dogs of buenos aires and their owners who let them defecate where they please.. no more cleaning up after them and after each day when you come back to your hotel you have to clean your shoes.....
watch when you walk especially in areas like palermo...

    Watch where you step!
  • Tip Rating:
  • You will see many dog-walkers who walk up to a dozen dogs at a time. You will also see stray dogs and cats. With the large number of felines and canines on the streets there is also many piles they leave behind. There is no pooper-scooper law in Buenos Aires so watch you step!

A Bit Worse for the Wear

  • Abandoned Elementary School - Buenos Aires
    Abandoned Elementary School

On our final day in Buenos Aires, after we had finished our lunch and touring in the historic San Telmo district, we decided to walk the five blocks to the National History Museum. It turns out that this part of the city, located between the San Telmo and La Boca districts has seen better days.

It was interesting to walk by this abandoned school in San Telmo, the boarded up 'Jardin de Infantes y Escuela Primaria' as it's sign said. There did not seem to be much happening on this steet, paved with cut stone blocks like those we had seen in Portugal. There were a few stray dogs wandering around but otherwise, the area seemed deserted of pedestrian traffic, even though it was only about 2 PM.

Probably not a good area to be wandering around in at night!

Avoid being Steal at an ATM
  • Tip Rating:
  • Be Carefull if you go to an ATM, if you have to go, do it during the day, never at night! and if possible with someone else! because there are a lot of steal at those places nowaday.

if by some reason your card gets stuck in the ATM don't go anyway, there are always bank phones in there where you can call and claimed that the ATM has cought it and they will tell you what to do, because if you leave it might be a trap and somebody will go after you to the atm and get money from your account!

    Money Exchange at EZE
  • Tip Rating:
  • Do not, and I repeat do not use the Money Exchange at baggage claim at the international airport EZE. They are thieves. For example, just this week (March 2008) they were offering 2.76 pesos to the USD!! When just outside in the arrivals hall the Banco De La Nacion was giving 3.17. And the bank is open very early in the morning and open late at night. There are also ATM machines around as well, so there is never a need to use these crooks.

    dangerous women...
  • Tip Rating:
  • This tip is mainly focus on younger people, who wish to get some fun at night clubs or as argentinian people called "SAUNAS"...
Before getting to argentina my argentinian friend, christian, prevented me not to believe to the women who offers you to visit they local. and to see the girls. He was walking around lavalle street and one lady offers him for a card with the service of a lady. this woman kindly invited him to see the place without any compromition.
so, my friend, wanted to see the place and this lady introduced him to another lady, who was sitting on a sofa inside the place. she called for the waitress and invited him for a soda. my friend, was afraid he said NOT THANKS..i just wanted to see the place and try to find out some other information. but this lady insist him and said CHEERS...my friend, didn`t want to drink because he was afraid to drink anything else than just a drink. so he wanted to leave her but this lady called to the waitress again, and the waitress said...you must pay for your drinks??? my friend said what??? she`s invited me...NO nono...must pay...my friend, didn`t want to pay so the waitress called to the "GUARD" and said that he doesn`t want to pay! my friend said i won`t pay. finally, he could scape running out quickly and he realized that it was a trick to steal his money....
So, when i was walking around this street, LAVALLE i saw a lady trying to give me a card and of course i didn`t accept her invitation and run away from her...SO FRIENDS DO NOT TRUST LADIES IN ARGENTINA who offers this kind of service if you want to get some fun must try for another way or better not to go...just enjoy with true friends...

tourism 101 dont be an idiot
  • Tip Rating:
  • I laugh at the tourist tips i read on this site. Ok people if u visit a known ¨bad¨area and have a bad experience i guess ur not as special as u thought u were. ha ha Buenos Aires is like any other huge city except that u can eat like a king for the price of a pauper , (one for the tourist 0 for the home team),the cafes are excellent and the women fashionable and fine. (drool)I think just 20 something European backpapers trying to see the world on a penny and penny pinching common sense lacking mature adults have a problem in this incredibly fantastic city. Show some common sense and relative awarness and u wont have a problem. BA might have a bananna republic for a goverment but its a sophisticated bunch overall, heads and shoulders above every other Latin American country i have been to and i have been to almost all of them.
Safety is no accident! Rock on amigos

    Buenos Aires- Pickpockets
  • Tip Rating:
  • My pocket was picked on the Avenida 9 de Julio at Rivadavia. Some guidebooks advise to have a "phoney" wallet and this is a good idea, as I actually didn´t have anything of value in this pocket. It was only a folded map that was given out by the hotel where I was staying.

    Buenos Aires is fairly safe...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Buenos Aires is fairly safe city. But, if travelling into some of the more working-clas barrios (esp. La Boca), try not to bring anything too valueable and don't carry a wallet. Also try to stay out of the quieter streets during the midday siesta (when the streets are next-to-deserted) as that is when you stand a good chance of getting mugged.
