Argentina - one country - 6 continents

by Trekki

Argentina's tourism office describes it as the land of 6 continents.Although I did not yet visit all the provinces and "continents", just from the pictures I can absolutely confirm it :-)So what is my favourite thing about Argentina ? It's it's diversity, it's landscapes, it's possibilities, the best wines on earth, the most beautiful mountains and peaks, the most lovely and adorable people, the horses, the asado, the mate (and if I don't stop, I'm still writing in year 2025...) The map shows the 6 continents within Argentina:Top left: where "America" reaches the top of the sky:this is the region with Jujuy, Tucumán, Catamarca, San Juan, San Luiz and finally my ever loved Mendoza. You can explore the most fascinating deserts, the mountains high up to 7000 m, drink the best wine, and enjoy sun during the whole year.Below: La Patagonia - forests, mountains, lakes and glaciers - a very wild...

El mate - not only a drink

by Trekki

The following text characterizes the most popular drink in whole Argentina, and tells you also why mate is not a drink :-)El MateEl mate no es una bebida.

BUENOS AIRES : SPANISH PROGRAM

by swesn

There are many schools in BA offering Spanish classes. Shop around. I went to the CENTRO UNIVERSITARIO DE IDIOMAS, which is the language school of University of Buenos Aires. It is NOT the cheapest but I found it good. There are 6 levels and you have to sit for a placement test.Unlike the language schools catering for TOURISTS (which can be more expensive and very intensive), in this centre, the students are usually living or working in Buenos Aires. As a result, the course is not a cramp-every-morsel-down-your-throat sort. It is a slow and steady course. There is a lot of drilling of the same thing during a level. While you may learn 'more' in a tourist-oriented language school for the same period, you learn DEEPER here.It depends on your preference. You may not have the luxury of time and hence, need to study Spanish like a tourist and not like a foreigner living there.School is...

"The old Patagonian Express" by Paul Theroux

by Trekki

Usually, I like to ready travel books before, during or after I am on the road. Here would be my general tip for reading about Argentina:"The old Patagonian Express" by Paul Theroux. In this book, he describes a journey by train, going from high in the north (Boston, Mass, US) along the whole globe down to Esquel in Patagonia / Argentina. He travels in all kinds of trains, usually second class, as this is how he can experience a country at it's best, listen to the local people, share the food and feel the special atmosphere. In Argentina, he took the "Estrella del Norte" from Tucumán to Buenos Aires, the "Subterrano" in Buenos Aires, the "Lago del Sur Express" from Buenos Aires to Ingeniero Jacobacci, and finally "La Trochita", the Old Patagonian Express vom there to Esquel.Among the people he met on the road was also Joege Luis Borges, famous argentine writer, poet and philosopher. Please...

La Boca - Buenos Aires

by luiggi

This neighborhood is maybe the most tourist in Buenos Aires.Their name is due to that is the mouth of the Riachuelo, place for the one that Pedro de Mendoza entered in the first foundation, and that it was used as port during a lot of time. Their activity was always linked to the port thing and the productive thing, being constituted starting from last century an important labor population of immigrants especially from Genova that spoke the xeneise dialect, word that is used now to define the inhabitants of this neighborhood.

Puerto Madero - Buenos Aires

by luiggi

This neighborhood is developed of the conversion of the old dikes and docks that conformed the old port of Buenos Aires, toward a recreational activity, being constituted quickly, for its proximity to the center, in a very tourist place. The big buildings that composed the docks, of bricks, to the English style, they were demolished in a side of the dike and transformed in the side next to the city, being occupied by great quantity of restaurants, cinemas, offices and to an university, of the other side they were built a hotel, housings and also they are transforming other buildings, as deposits of cereals, at the same time that some modern buildings were added in places where before there were not constructions.

El Bolson - Patagonia

by luiggi

El Bolson is a haven of peace, a corner of fantasy, where the hand of the man has made only the necessary to live in equilibrium with nature. The slogan of the place "EL BOLSON, ecological place in favor of the life" is not only a phrase to astonish the tourists, it is a style of life for those young boys and girls who arrived to EL BOLSON in the 60's or 70's disappointed with the urban life. They settle here many hippie communities that live in huts made of wood and placed in the middle of the forest, they dedicated their life to agriculture and handcraft. This style of life and the care of the inhabitants let them to maintain the purity of the environment, task very difficult to realize nowadays.

Parque Nacional Nahuel Huapi - Patagonia

by luiggi

Parque Nacional Nahuel Huapi is one of the jewels of Argentina. This is a spectacular area of lakes and rivers carved from ancient glaciers, majestic mountains, inviting valleys, meadows and wildflowers. The name comes from the Mapuche language, where nahuel is tigre, or tiger, and huapi is isla, or island.
