Massive city needs Massive roads

by city_guy

This road is called the Carlos Pellegrini (I think) and it had a massive 16-18 lane ONE way traffic. Wow... now that's massive. The biggest road I ever crossed was only about 6-8 lanes so this came as a shocker to me.By the time I got half way, we had to stop to let the traffice go... no kidding☺ The traffic, the meat, the leather goods.☺

Presidio - Ushuaia - Fireland

by realde14

The Presidio military prison gave Ushuaia one of its prime reasons for its existence when the first prisoners arrived in 1896. Until the prison was closed in 1947, Argentinas most notorious political convicts spent time in the Presidio. The life and harsh living and work conditions of the prisoners is very well documented in the Presidio. For me, this is a very fascinating place because of this double notion of being emprisoned in jail at the end of the world, where life in such an isolated city as is Ushuaia can already feel like a prison in itself. This is why Ushuaia is my favorite place in Argentina. For more about this great place, visit my special travelpage on Ushuaia.

Ushuaia - Fireland - at the end of the world

by realde14

Geographically Ushuaia is the world's southernmost city, at the end of the world so-to-speak. Located in Tierra del Fuego, Ushuaia has grown to more than 50'000 inhabitants. The growth in population took place escpecially over the last two decades, when Ushuaia started to attract companies and labor with tax breaks and and duty-free benefits.Ushuaia is located on the Beagle Channel, which you can see very nicely when you walk through Ushuaias steep streets or go up to the mountains that seem to rise right out of the ocean. It's also the last city before you cross the Drake passage in order to sail to Antarctica. I hope I will get to do this trip one day!

Parque Paleontologico Bryn-Gwyn

by realde14

This place is full of Patagonian fossils dating from tprehistoric times when Patagonia was submerged by the ocean. This vast outdoor park is very deserted with its moon-like landscape. Apart from paleontologists, there are very few people here, making this an ideal place to enjoy the silence and the vast spaces of Patagonia. To get here from Madryn, drive to Trelew, Gaiman where you will find signs poiting to the park. Don't worry about getting lost: there are very few streets in Patagonia, chances are you are on the right one!

Chubut Province - Patagonia

by realde14

Like other villages in the vast and sparsely populated Chubut province of Patagonia, Puerto Madryn was founded by Welsh settlers in the 1860s. Other Welsh villages worthwile visiting are Trelew and Gaiman.Puerto Madryn is great introduction to the vast plateaus of Patagonia. Patagonia is a very isolated and lonely place where the beauty relies in the solitude of its nature. If you are interested in topic of Patagonia, Bruce Chatwin's "In Patagonia" is one of the best books written on the subject, full of random little episodes.

Puerto Madryn/Peninsula Valdes - Patagonia

by realde14

The Peninsula Valdes is around an hour drive from Puerto Madryn and is famous for its wildlife with whales, penguins, sea-lions, elefant seals. There are several tour operators in Madryn that will take you Valdes (where there is no accommodation).

Penitentes - Mendoza

by realde14

Snowboarding in Las Lenas is probably as good as it gets in Latin America. Penitentes, is a much smaller resort, but then again, a lot closer to Mendoza. Most places in Latin America for snowboarding are above the treelines; Las Lenas and Penitentes are no exception. There are not many people snowboarding (and skiing) in Latin America, which means there's never a long wait in front of the lifts, which, on the other hand, might not be as modern as in North America or Europe. Las Lenas does, however, have very modern lifts

Tip Photo
Las Lenas - Mendoza

by realde14

Las Lenas in the Mendoza province is for me Latin America's best snowboard resort. Plenty of runs, modern equipment, and great nightlife. It is a bit of an isolated place, there are no other buildings than hotels, and if you don't have reservations in any of these, there are very few other options for accommodation.

Tip Photo
Mendoza

by realde14

After Bariloche, Mendoza was the next stop, the pleasant capital of the Cuyo region, famous for its wines and its proximity to the Andes.Mendoza's center is very easily visited as the streets are laid out in a grid system. There are several nice Plazas or squares, Plaza Independencia and Plaza Espana with its tiles are especially nice for sitting down and relax.

Tip Photo
Bariloche - Cerro Catedral

by realde14

The slopes on Cerro Catedral are around 20 minutes away from Bariloche by minibus. The snowboarding is pretty good, and the skilifts quite modern. There are a couple of accommodations on the bottom of Cerro Catedral, but you are better off staying in Bariloche and buying an all-inclusive package with hotel, skipasses and transport to the slopes.
