Mate

by trek06

My first introduction to Mate was with friends at Casa Pueblo. Now I have it at home and at work. In Canada, you can buy it in health food stores like Amaranth in Calgary. In Argentina it is common to have Mate in the afternoon at home. I think I'll go heat up some water right now...

Tip to Mercedes Sosa..the great argentine Singer, in fact very much respected in all of South America. In the early 70's she had to leave Argentina, a threat to the Junta. She went to Spain and France. She returned to Argentina 1984Her Music can be found on the web.

Game of Pato

by pepples46

a ball embeded in lederstraps which gets trown around by players on horses...and tried to smash the ball in a big net on poles.in the early days, a poor Duck got strapped up and trown around...no kidding!!each succesful goal gives 1/2 a point to the team. the horses are special breed, just like Polohorses....why did I put it under Local Custom, I don't think the game is played outside of Argentina, where it has astude followers....but now it is played outside Argentina...Europe has adopted it, France the current champion...info from ESPN

Wine Tasting

by msforbes

Some wonderful stuff is made here, especially (but not just) from Cayfayate, try, try and try some more. Try a nice full bodied Malbec when you're dining on every part of the cow on the grill. Some noteable estates are Lopez and Wineart. I would like to hear some more if you have any.

El mate - not only a drink

by Trekki

Mate - this is one of the most famous customs in Argentina. It's more than drinking tea - it's a kind of institution, done all over the country :-)A wonderful text exists about the philosophy of drinking mate - but as space is limited here, I have added it to "General Tips" - please see here:Mate

Mate drinking

by sylvia-chica

The habit of drinking mate is the only widly spread custom in argy land. Everywhere you will see people carrying a thermos with hot water to fill the mate-cups. Then they put green Yerba Mate (looks like marihuana or spices) in the cup and suck it up through a little iron strow... After they drank the mate they refill it with the hot water and give it to the next. Nice to see and for me nice to taste. It is bitter, but women often drink it with sugar.

Make sure to have lots of change

by sophisticate

Buenos Aires merchants are a little obsessed with exact change. Try to keep a lot of change on hand or you'll encounter a few dirty looks. For example, if your bill is $7.35 be sure to give the cashier $.35 even if you have to break a $20 or $100 peso note for the rest.
