The Gaucho

by lolitajane

For many people, the word gaucho means orphan and not without reason as its origins come from two civilizations (the European and the Indian). Possibly the first gauchos were people who broke their ties with the past and went to the loneliness of the great Pampa were there was water and grass for the cows introduced by the European colonists to graze. Only one hour from Buenos Aires the traveller will be able to learn about the tasks in the Argentinean countryside, the life of the gaucho and his incredible skill with the "boleadoras" (three stones tied together with a rope which, when thrown, tangle with the legs of the cows and immobilize them), the knife, the lasso and the use of the correct techniques for salting the best meat in the world. Dressed with baggy knee length trousers, sombrero or beret, handkerchief round the neck, spurs and a sharp knife hanging from his belt (which on...

Choripan

by Rebecca_jp

It's kind of fast food, you just need some pan (bread) and chorizo (it's kind of sausage, red pork sausage). At home we eat that when we make asado (kind of barbecue) or we make just the chorizo to make after the typical sandwich. Choripan is a tradition for every event you can imagine, you can find people on the streets selling choripan outside of the stadium when you go to a soccer match or to a concert. You can find people selling it in the parks. And of course you will find it in many local cafes and restaurants. Choripan is very argentinian and it's really great, try it if you are here ;-) !

Argentinian wedding

by Rebecca_jp

Since this country is officially catholic 90% of the inhabitants get married in churchs. Of course you must go to the ward office to get married by papers too. It doesn't matter if you are not catholic, churchs offer you a short course and after you can get married there, not so catholic but if you like this kind of ceremony you can get it.Argentina has lots of really nice churchs and you can visit them everywhere.

The GauchoDressed with baggy knee length trousers, sombrero or beret, handkerchief round the neck, spurs and a sharp knife hanging from his belt (which on holidays is changed for a hanging money belt for silver coins) they skilfully ride through the ranches and the prairies. See this picture, a calendar from Molina Campos, a famous artist

by la_beba

The Gaucho is a native of Indian and Spanish descent, born in the 'Banda Oriental' (1) in the 18th century, skilful on the land, generally a horseman, whose arms were the lasso and the 'facón' (long knife). He was part of the national army in the wars for independence. He was well known for his proverbial love for freedom; for his honesty and his courage; for his acute awareness of the psychology of mankind and its situations; for his lack of interest and detachment of material things; for his remarkable sense of humor and his unquestionable love for friendship. The word Gaucho comes from the Quechuan expression 'huacho', which means orphan or vagabond. Later, the Spaniards associated the word 'guacho' with the word orphan, and the word 'gaucho' with vagabond. The Gaucho clothing:Chambergo (cocked hat)Hat of the countryman, made of felt. Some have chinstrap, which is a strip or cord that...

by la_beba

I loooooooove soccer, and in Argentina.... soccer is as big as the tango. They've been one of best exponents thruout the years. Maradona 'El Pibe de Oro' it's been said to be the greatest soccer player of all times.... (I'm not so sure that's all that accurate and have to remember Brazil's Pelé, but Maradona was quite GREAT! also) My team.... the Boca Juniors!!!! (forget River Plate kiddies!) :oP hahaha.... and how not to be their greatest fan when it was the team to which great players belonged!!!! as Maradona, Claudio Caniggia, Riquelme, Palermo.... and my favorite!!!!!!: devastatingly gorgeous monumental hunk: Gabriel Batistuta (picture here)!!!!! If you're ever in Argentina, try to go to a soccer match and presence las 'hinchadas' live!

by la_beba

Also gotta know about Carlos Gardel to know the Argentinian's culture, to feel this country and their love for 'tango'.... just try to imagine the impact on baseball if the entire New York Yankees team were to die in an air crash. Then imagine that the New York Mets happened to be in the same aircraft. You still would fall short of assessing what it meant for the nation of Argentina and many other South American countries, to wake up on the morning of June 25, 1935 to the chilling news shaped in bold letters headlines that, except for minor variations in copy, were saying the same unthinkable fact: Gardel is dead.Gardel and Lepera had become very successful partners in the Tango-for-films department. Under contract with Paramount, Carlos Gardel, a singer of uncertain nationality, was becoming a box office attraction in South America because of his personal appeal, his baritone voice and...
