Various Spots: Tango in Buenos Aires

by Waxbag

There are many many Tango venues in B.A. Grab a free BA Tango or el tangauta. These are hard to find. They may have one in your hostel or hotel. They are also in Tango shoe stores. You can find info on classes and on dances. A good way to go is to find a dance that gives lessons before the dance begins. Then you may have an opportunity to meet more people as they switch partners during the lesson. The cultural centers are great way to get good lessons at a very reasonable price. Check out their schedules by using the above.Carlos Ricciutti is a very enthusiastic teacher at the Recoleta Cultural Center who speaks english. He taught there on Tuesday and Thursday afternoon.A great web site is http://www.tangodata.com.ar/ There are many venues check out the BA Tango publications for the latest.Check out my Tango Travel Log for more info and picture on the Tango scene. I would say in general,...

Tango at Ideal
Newport: When you need it

by jdpfu

In Recoleta near the McDonald's is a club called the Newport. We stumbled into this place buy accident because there was a high female ratio. Before I'd gotten to the bar, 2 women had already said hello and were chatting me up. They were both from Brazil which usually means "working girl" in a bar like this. Confirmed. If you NEED IT, you can certainly get it here. For those who have never been to Argentina, prostitution is culturally accepted to the point where 70+ year old men in the family expected part of our trip to include it. It was expected. None, but don't look sloppy.

The Shamrock Irish Pub: Neighborhood pub

by jdpfu

The bar-staff make this place. Luna stepped up to the "make me a drink I'll like" after making a few drinks that I wanted very well.We frequented this bar on Sunday (bombed!), Tuesday (bombed!) and Thursday (dance club night). Thursday-Saturday they open the basement into a disco and the place is packed with locals dancing to techno beats, drinking and exchanging cell phone numbers. The crowd is under 30 those nights.English is spoken by most of the staff, but almost none of the locals, so have your Spanish ready on techno nights. Sunday-Wednesday, English works and a few expats may show up. But they are expats in Argentina - VERY FUN PEOPLE!After making friends with a bartender, all our drinks were excellent and full of what you buy a drink for. None - but Portinos are snappy dressers.

The Library Lounge: A Universe within a capital city

by Stefaliscious

Hidden in a barrio in Buenos Aires provincia is a place where rose petals sit atop the baby grand, the leather couches are strategically placed throughout the room so that portenos and travelers can intertwine over malbec and tapas. Showmanship lives boldly in every act they put on, from the musicians to the deejays to the sensual tango. In the heart of the city, this seperate Universe provides the seduction one would expect from Buenos Aires. Faena Hotel+Universe - one of the top 500 hotels on Earth. The room: the Library Lounge - the experience: worth a thousand more words. As always in life, where what you want - but at Faena, nobody is under-dressed.

mendoza: Thousands of pretty girls - Mendoza

by emersonf

There are like 5 universities in Medoza. Thats why there were no less than 1,000 people all out for dinner on the side walks and 90% were beautiful. It was crazy. Ask someone where all the 20-28 year olds hang ouy for dinner. It was 5 blocks long and amazing. The concierge at the Park Hyatt Mendoz sent us that way....

Good places at different times of year

by phyll

I won't give any name of places, since I don't remember them. I just want to give a tip to travellers in Argentina who want to enjoy the nightlife. If you come in january, late december and early february, don't waste your time in Bs As. Many of the discos are closed, and most of young people are not there. The real spot is Mar del Plata: last time I was there I thought I was in Miami beach: many discos, many hungry girls (that's for guys), and many hungry guys too ( that's for girls) :-pThe town to really avoid: Bahia Blanca. Just nothing to do (in january. After, I don't know)Other good places in summer would be in the mountains: Bariloche, El Calafate are good since there are a few good bars, pubs. Just go in the town center and follow the music, you won't miss the spots. If you go during the working days, the spot is of course Bs As. A lot of big discos there. Good places to dance...

Downtown BA, palermo and recoleta: Nights out in Buenos Aires

by Joroma

Before coming here to Buenos Aires, I heard that the night life here was great. But after spending more than 6 months here I am assuming that this was before the crisis. It's difficult to find places to dance here, as most people tend to go to bars and drink while listening to a DJ!!!!! A find this a bit bizzare having a DJ and not being able to dance. We found many great bars with a great vibe, but it's such a shame that you can't dance. We have been to a few places where you can dance but they are filled with teenagers or people aged over 40. If your looking for dancing, the best bet is to head for the expensive big clubs like Mint and pacha, but prepare yourself, they dont open till 2am!!!!!!

The kilkeny: Depressing

by Joroma

This is said to be one of the best Irish bars in Buenos Aires. Well i must say that this is nothing like an Irish bar at all. It's dark ang gloomy with depressing music. We tried this place several times at different hours and it still remained the same.....Boring!!!!!The drinks are overpriced too, and the choice of cocktails is thin. They also charge you 10 pesos to get in here after 11. And you cant even dance, how absurd!! Casual

La cigale: Tacky french nights

by Joroma

People say this place is hip. I beg to differ. Tuesday night is French night and it's the busiest I've ever seen it. Probably due to the fact that portenos are obessed with the French!!!!!!The place itself is a bit tacky but ok to go for a drink or two, and has good prices. It is well know as a pick up joint for Argentines. Most of the people prefer to stand outside although there are no seats. No dancing is allowed here. Casual
