Puerto Iguazu - Hito Tres Fronteras

by vtveen

If you are staying in the town of Puerto Iguazu it is a nice walk along Av. Tres Fronteras to a small park at the end of this shady road. In this park is a blue white coloured pyramid, marking the border with two other countries: Brazil and Paraguay. From the park the view to the both countries is rather impressive and you also can see the place where the Rivers Parana and Iguazu come together. Brazil and Paraguay also have a same kind of memorial to mark the 'Tres Fronteras', but in their own national colours. In the park are some souvenir stands and one can buy a drink or have an icecream.

Great views from the Palacio Barolo

by Flem2002

The Palacio Barolo was designed as a mausoleum for Dante's Ashes, but it's not clear what the place is used for today. However, there are guided tours around the place with English and Spanish speaking guides. The explanations of the place are difficult to understand (even in my native language) but it was worth the tour just for the views from the observation deck on the 20th floor and the 22nd floor lighthouse. There's no charge, but a tip is expected - 40 minute tours from 2pm to 7pm, Mondays to Thursdays.

Stark, but Beautiful

by kucha

It' s worth the trip to the southernmost city in the world -- and not just to say you "were there." The natural beauty of this region is impressive and only a short trip by bus will get you to some of the most incredible glaciers and ice floes to be found.

Relax in the Tigre

by sophisticate

If you are visiting Buenos Aires for an extended period, do like the portenos and head out to the Tigre delta for a few days of relaxation. The delta's only 45 minutes away by train and full of fun hotels (choose one with a pool). Take the ferry boat out to Tres Bocas for the day and explore the back waters of the famous delta. Pack accordingly, it can be a good deal hotter here than in the city.

Jesuit Mission San Ignacio de Mini

by Waxbag

San Ignacio is a small village of 5000 that contains one of the largest and best preserved of the old Jesuit Missions, San Ignacio Mini.Founded in the 17th century San Ignacio was a prosperous mission with nearly 4000 people, 35,000 cattle, and 65,000 sheep and goat. The Jesuits taught the native Guarani trades and skills as well as gave them spiritual guidance. Unfortunately for the missions and even more so for the Guarani, the Spanish and Portuguese Crowns as well as the slave traders and other private plantation found these Jesuits a nuisance to their profits and political pursuits. By 1767 the missions were completely abundant and the Gaurani had to go back to their former semi-nomadic life.San Igancio covers a large area and has an excellent church. It is an enormous red sandstone church with intricately carved doorways which is styled as "Guarani Baroque". The whole site has...

Wine and Canyons in Cafayate, Salta Province

by Waxbag

Cafayate is a charming little town with about a dozen bodegas all within walking distance and is a great base to explore one of the most beautiful canyons in the country. Bodega Etchart and Bodega La Banda are good wineries to get a tour and to sample wine, but there are many other good ones around that do tours. Cafayate is known for its white wines that are grown from a Spanish grape. However, I think merlots are much better. The Quebrada de Cafayate is the name of the stunning canyon. The years of rain erosion have exposed many layers of sedimentary strata in the quebrada, making it technicolored landscape. The wind has also made its mark here and many interesting structure stand like in a Dr. Sues book. The locals have names for all these formations like El Sapo (the toad), El Obelisco (the obelisk), and Los Castillos (the castles) to name a few. There is also a Garganta del Diablo...

SALTA & JUJUY : SALINAS GRANDE, QUEBRADA DEL TORO

by swesn

At 3500+m altiplano, on the route towards the Chilean border, there is a huge salt pan called Salinas Grande. It is absolutely flat and white! There are salt-miners, covered up entirely to protect them against the sun and the reflection from the salt pans. However, the day I went, the weather was bad. We had thought we would get cobalt-blue sky once we cleared the cloud level but no, there was another layer of clouds above the altiplano. There at the salt pan, a storm was brewing? From San Antonio de Los Cobres (an ulgy mining town way up at the altiplano) to Salta, one passes the Quebrada del Toro, another spectacular rock-strewn gorge. Here, the road switches back and fro with the rail-way line of the famous Tren a Los Nubes (Railway to the Clouds).

ROUTE FROM CACHI TO SALTA

by swesn

Another amazing route!! The road from Cachi to Salta climbs continuous to Cuesta del Obispo, passing a straight stretch of road La Recta del Tin-Tin which offers beautiful views of the Los Cardones National Park, an area with huge candelabra cacti scattered all over the desert. At the summit of Piedra de Molino (3300+m), one finds oneself above the clouds and suddenly looking down at a ribbony road down Quebrada de Escoipe. A journey with incredible views.
