MENDOZA : PUENTE DEL INCA

by swesn

The natural bridge formed by sulphur hot springs, somehow solidified, is really interesting. It crosses Rio Mendoza at a height of 19m. It is 21m long and 27m wide. It is located at 2700m amongst the Andes, between the Chilean-Argentinian border and Mendoza.A hotel had built thermal baths under the bridge. Decades ago, an earthquake or avanlanche destroyed the hotel and the baths now remained somewhat in ruins. Still, it is a great place to soak your feet or your entire body. Better to wait for the day tourists to leave. Stay the night and head out to the thermal pool above the bridge and contemplate the Milky Way. You have to be mentally strong to strip down to your swim-suit before you enter the natural jacuzzi. You have to be even MORE mentally strong to get out of the pool.

USHUAIA : BEAGLE CHANNEL CRUISE

by swesn

Many cruise operators heading down along the Beagle Channel have stalls at the dock and the prices are more or less similar. There are several types. The 3-hour cuirse takes you through the Bay of Ushuaia, seeing cormorants and sea-lions along the way until the Les Eclaireurs Light-House and the sunken ship of Mte. Cervantes. The 6-hour one heads all the way down the Beagle Channel until Estancia Harberton, passing a colony of Magellan penguins.

visit an estancia

by tini58de

Well, it is not exactly off the beaten path, but visiting an estanzia was quite an experience and a nice contrast to the big city of Buenos Aires. It was an organized tour and we were shown around the estanzia, there were some "typical" gaucho games and an asado!A very enjoyable day!

USHUAIA : PARQUE NACIONAL TIERRA DEL FUEGO

by swesn

The park of mountains, lakes, rivers and valleys stretches west to the Chilean border and north to Lake Fagnano. There are several beautiful trails. One is the Coastal Path and another is along Lago Roca all the way to the Chilean border. Both are easily managed, if you do not lose the trail-posts. However, the weather here, being at the ‘end of the world’, is very cold and unpredictable. It is possible to find archaeological evidences along Lapataia Bay, like remains of mussel shells. Tierra del Fuego was previously populated by a few Indian races, all of which are extinct now. Here, at the National Park, the area was inhabited by the canoeing group called ‘Yamanas’.

CAFAYATE : QUEBRADA DE CAFAYATE

by swesn

This is truly one of the most gorgeous natural sceneries I had ever seen. The Quebrada de Cafayate or Quebrada de Las Conchas is on Route 68 towards Salta. Along the gorge of Rio de las Conchas, there are fascinating rock formations of red, ochre, yellow, beige, orange, coral, sienna, brown, grey, hint of lavendar, etc… colours, carved entirely by wind and water. Some formations are named and they are all sign-posted. Better to go in a car or join a tour from Cafayate so that you can stop to admire the amazing sights.

BUENOS AIRES : TIGRE

by swesn

Tigre is the delta area of Rio Parana. The whole place is criss-crossed by canals and rivers and islands. Instead of cars and garages out in front of the houses, they have boat docks. Boats are the way to travel around here. Tigre has an entirely different and very tranquil atmosphere from busy Buenos Aires, just 29km south. Take a launch service and relax on one of the islands. Note, there are a lot of mosquitoes.

BUENOS AIRES : COSTANERA SUR WILDLIFE RESERVE

by swesn

This is a stretch of marshland that is reclaimed from the Rio de la Plata, right by the side of the city of 11 million people. Many bird species can be spotted here, including the graceful black-necked swans. Entrance is free. There are a few walking trails. A wonderful and very accessible retreat.Once you reach Puerto Madero, a converted warehouse that now contains restaurants and bars, cross the bridge and keep walking til you come to a river. Then turn south. Entrance is at Av Tristan Achabal Rodriguez 1550.

MENDOZA : ACONCAGUA

by swesn

Aconcagua is the highest mountain in the whole of America. While not many of us is able to scale it, it is just a short hike away from Puente del Inca to VIEW it.Walk towards the Chilean border. After a bridge, you will see a foot-path heading right. Sooner or later, you will come across Lago de los Horcones, a multi-coloured lake with a wonderful view of Aconcagua in the distance.

IRUYA : END OF THE ROAD

by swesn

Even more remote, is tiny Iruya. This is a gorgeous little village wedged on a hillside. There is only one unpaved road that leads to it from Iturbe. From Humahuaca, it is 66 km away. There is one daily bus and after about 1.5 to 2 hours, the same bus returns to Humahuaca. The village really has an end-of-the-road feel as the one road ends right in front of the church and surrounding the village are cliffs and mountains. The road reaches over 4000m at one point at Abra del Condor where there is a huge Pacha Mama (Mother Earth) shrine. Then, it drops steeply into Quebrada de Iruya with, once again, tremendously astounding views.

TILCARA & HUMAHUACA : QUEBRADA DE HUMAHUACA

by swesn

Yet another fabulous valley lined by colourful canyons by the side is Quebrada de Humahuaca, along Route 9. This route up north will ultimately take you to the border town with Bolivia, La Quiaca. As a result, the towns along this route, Tilcara and Humahuaca, have an utterly different flavour from the other towns in Argentina. There is a very Indian flavour here. Terrific to spend a few days in this region, in touch with Mother Nature.
