PURMAMARCA : SEVEN-COLOURS MOUNTAIN

by swesn

Purmamarca is a picturesque charming little village at the foot of a mountain known as ‘Seven-Colours Mountain’. Indeed, the highly photogenic mountain has a series of colours swirling on the rock strata. It is at a fantastically remote locale, best seen in the morning.

EL CALAFATE : LAGUNA NIMES

by swesn

While the most impressive places to visit here in El Calafate are the glaciars, do not forget the simple charm of a nearby bird reserve, Laguna Nimes. The area is abundant with various birdlife and is extremely peaceful for a relaxing stroll. I felt totally in touch with nature there. It was a wonderful feeling.

Aconcagua Mount

by lolitajane

The Aconcagua (6.959 m) - “stone sentinel” in the Indian language - the highest peak in the Western Hemisphere towers over its surroundings. Its steep slopes are renown and respected by mountain climbers the world over, who come to challenge its imposing heights as condors soar over their heads. Ninety-five kilometres separate Mendoza from Uspallata, which in turn is 80 Km from the winter resort of Penitentes. Leaving Puente del Inca one reaches Paso de la Cumbre and the Cristo Redentor tunnel that links with Chile. From here one can see the Southeast wall of the Aconcagua (6,959 m).

The Moon Valley

by lolitajane

If you spend the night in San Agustín del Valle Fértil, in the province of San Juan, you can see the Ischigualasto Provincial Park, knows as Valle de la Luna, where millions of years ago there was a lake, and today, fossils of plants, dinosaurs and other animals can be found.

Adventure Trip in Mendoza

by lolitajane

The high peaks (Aconcagua, Mercedario, Tupungato) and the snow fields are ideal for mountain winter sports. The foothills are suitable for hang-gliding and paragliding, the reservoirs and lagoons for canoeing and windsurfing. Rafting take place on the Mendoza, Diamante, Atuel and San Juan rivers. On the Barreal El Leoncito plateau take part in windsurfing with tricycles with sails, known as "carrovelismo". Mendoza has important winter resorts (Penitentes, Vallecitos and especially, Las Leñas). La Rioja, Mendoza and San Juan offer horseback excursions to see guanacos and vicuñas.

Bosques Petrificados Natural Monument

by lolitajane

It is located 225 Km on the West Side of Puerto Deseado. 130 million years ago, this place was an orchard destroyed by volcanic action. Vast forests of araucaria (kind of pine) and other species perished and were covered by volcanic ash. Having the exogenous elements disappeared by effect of the wind and water; today it resembles a ghostly landscape of petrified tree trunks, some of them 35 meters high and with a diameter of 3 meters. Further north, nearby Sarmiento (Chubut) you can find José Ormaechea Petrified Forest.

The Cueva de Las Manos

by lolitajane

To the south of the town of Perito Moreno, there is one of the most significant displays of cave painting in Patagonia. Handprints and hunting scenes which are over 9,300 years old, fill the caves and rocky gable-ends of the River Pinturas canyon. The Cueva de las Manos takes its name (Cave of the Hands) from the stencilled outlines of human hands in the cave, but there are also many depictions of animals, such as guanacos (Lama guanicoe), rheas and pumas, which are still common in the region. The hunter-gatherer communities that were responsible for the paintings inhabited this remote area of Patagonia until the arrival of European settlers in the 17th century. The Cueva de las Manos was declared World Cultural Heritage by the UNESCO, in 1999.

by MacKiwi

PATAGONIA is an enormous region south of Buenos Aires province features a mountainous interior, unique coastal wildlife and Andean national parks. Península Valdés is a special treat for lovers of wildlife, with large numbers of sea lions, elephant seals, guanacos, rheas, penguins, sea birds, flamingos and right whales. The Perito Moreno Glacier of Santa Cruz is a 60-meter-high (197-ft-high) river of rising, toppling ice, though it hasn't been advancing for several years. Carmen de Patagones is a beautiful colonial city and there are unexpected vestiges of the area's previous Welsh inhabitants - in particular the town of Gaiman.
