Of course the main draw to this ocean-side city, is the beach. Since MDP is reported to be jammed with vacationers during the summer (Dec-Feb), I chose to visit in November. You´ll find in SANTA CLARA DEL MAR a very nice and quiet place, visited most of the time by families.I was looking EXACTLY that kind of enviropment to spend my short vacations.So, we did almost NOTHING but, to have funb, meeting friends, some "asados" and drink MATE...Pretty PERFECT vacations...!more
This is by far the best pasta/Italian food place in the WORLD!!! Have been to BA many times for tango which is my passion. Mar del Plata is a much more relaxed place but there are still lots of courses and milongas every night of the week. I took an intermediate level course with ctl argentina who were also teaching me spanish (that was a challenge for them!!) and found them very good on both counts.more

An airplane ticket from Aeroparque (Buenos Aires) to MDP was 166P/$57USD. At the MDP airport, we picked up a remis that took us to our downtown hotel for 12P/$4USD.
A 1/2 day tour of the city cost 10P/$3.50USD.
A bus ticket to Necochea (south) was 10.75P/$3.65USD. A taxi from our downtown hotel to the bus station was 3P/$1USD. The bus from MDP to Villa Gesell (north coast) was 7.60P/$2.60USD.
At the Diagonal Pueyrredon, you can find a few rows of rather artistic handicraft stalls. It is not the largest or the best in Argentina, but you just might be able to find some delightful items here.
Come in the evening as things start to get really lively. Sometimes, there are street-side performances as well.
What to buy: Crafts like candle-holders, displays made from soldering iron together, wooden crafts like kitchenware, more tango figurines, glass jewellery, handmade trinkets, etc...

Wow, this place is a hidden gem for sports lovers. Came here in the winter (I mean summer here), weather was great, beaches are great, the golf courses are fantastic and they have clay court tennis. Was in Mar del Plata in September 07 to purchase an apartment. I like MDP more than BA as its more relaxed and anyway I am more of a beach person. I think the place is going to grow in terms of foreign tourists and the property market is very cheap by comparison.
