    An evening stroll in Cordoba
    by mikegr
Cordoba is a lovely city to wander around in the evening as the shops are closing (around 8pm).

The city is attractively lit and there are a number of musicians playing in the streets.

    My favourite time of day.

Its worth noting that there aren't so many restaurants in the city's pedestrianized streets - Ruedo, behind the Cathedral, is one of the few - but based on the service there, I advise you to avoid it. (see my restaurant tip).

Cordoba is a great place to go shopping, especially for fashionable clothes for younger people (thank the student population for this).

The best places to go are the pdestrianized streets, which are very shady and you will find to the North West of Plaza San Martin (though they extend in places to the North East and South West).

There are also many places to sit outside and drink coffee

After getting a crick in your neck looking up at the ceiling inside the Cathedral, look down at the pavement when you go outside again.

It took me a long time to realize that the seemingly random white lines (they look random when you are walking over them!) are in fact a mirror image of the Cathedral. You can see this infront of the Old City Hall and a number of other historical buildings.

    A nice touch.

Not the most impressive of Cordoba's religious buildings, Iglesia Santa Catalina is never the less my favourite.

The interior is beautifully painted but the lighting, just above head level, only gives you an impression of it's true splendour. A tantalising glimpse.

Behind the alter is a barred off section, behind which you can see the nuns in quiet, isolated contemplation. Until 7.30 pm when, with microphones amplifying their voices, they sing the most beautiful music - it is exquisite.

It is not permitted to photograph the nuns.

Facing directly onto Plaza San Martin, the Cathedral is the most imposing building in Cordoba and dates from 1577 when it's construction began. Though very impressive from the outside, to appreciate the Cathedral fully it is definitely worth going inside, although the doors are closed in the middle of the day, so make sure you are there early in the morning or after 4pm in the afternoon.

Plaza San Martin is in the very middle of the city center and is pedestrianized on the Western and Northern sides. There are plenty of places to sit and big trees help to keep it cool in the middle of the day.

Popular with older people and students.

A nice place to sit with an oversized Argentinian ice cream!

In the province, there are great hiking opportunities at the Sierras de Cordoba, a mountain range to the west of the city. My favourite places are the Cerro Champaqui, a hill of 2880 m, and the Quebrada del rio Condorito (Condorito river's Gorge), a National Park.
Quebrada del Condorito is a V-shaped crack more than 400 mts in depth and with 1500 mts between its walls. It's one of the few places where you can see condors at short distance; they nest on the steep southern balcony, from where the view is magnificent.

Cordoba is a city with a famous University and so about 160.000 students are living here coming from all over Argentina
I had no better idea than tasting the evening athmosphere together with my guide Werner
He took me to a so called brown cafe, good music, no fantasies, pictures of Che on the wall.
Cooled beers, Brahma, available at a social price of 4 Peso, 1 euro. But one bottle is 990cl.
Do you think this is a problem for somebody like me coming from Belgica.
We had a good conversation with some students, charing a table outside the Cafe and of course dealing view points on political questions

A mess of architecture styles due to the long period of the building time (more than 2 centuries). Finally an heritage of the Jesuits and a memory of their influencing period even after the final decision of pope Clemens XIV to stop all activities of this monastic, religious order
