Traditional Franciscan architecture and finished only early 20th century.
Many parts in this church are builded by wood, like the Altar and the pulpit, well decorated
by local craftsmen and influenced by the "Cuzco" school.
To see more details of this splendid religious art you have to visit the next door Museo Historico Franciscano

A visit of the tourist office is worth, even if you don't have anything to ask :-) It is an old train station and there is inside a very nice inner court with glass, very practical also when the heat is strong! The people are also very friendly.

Open from 7am to 9pm in the week en 9am to 9pm in the weekend.

Plaza Belgrano is Jujuy's main square and like most main square's in colonial cities in Argentina, it is the heart of the town and is surrounded by important buildings, in this case the Casa de Gobierno, the Cabildo (now a police museum) and the impressive cathedral. Thereīs a large statue of General Belgrano in the centre and plenty of benches for people watching. Early evening is a good time to walk through the square as there are always lots of people around.

    Exhibit in Jujuy Museum

The Archaeological Museum was the only museum we could find in Jujuy not observing the afternoon fiesta so we popped in for a visit. The lady running it was very friendly and we spent as much time talking to her as we did seeing the museum. She had never heard of Ireland so I spent a lot of time telling her about it!

The highlight of the museum is the clay sculpture of a woman with snakes on her head giving birth to a child. Sounds strange but itīs pretty intriguing. There are five rooms in all and thereīs a leaflet available with some English translations of whatīs on display.

The Mercado del Sur is opposite to the bus terminal at Av. Dorrego and Leandro Alem, on the south side of the Rio Xibi Xibi.
I was there in the area and saw a lot of little shops selling "sandals" and summer stuff, a little bit further, there was little market "stands" on the sidewalk selling vegetables and various thing to eat. I don't know if it was really the Mercado del Sur described in my book, but I did like it!!! The market was really lively thanks to the colorful Quechua population which was walking around there, looking for the best price ;-)

The building dates only from 1912 but its museum contains relics from the early Franciscan presence as well as a strong collection of colonial art from the Cuzco school (world-renowed style of painting of the name of the Peruvian city where indeginous Peruvians were thought to paint by Spanish conquerors in the style of the great Spanish and Flemish masterpieces).
