Villavicencio by Trekki Villavicencio, some 50-60 km north of Mendoza, has been a Thermal Spring Hotel in the past. The building is still visible, and you can have some rest in the beautiful gardens. A bit off this place is the mineral water facility "Villavicencio", whose bottles you find in the supermarkets, with gas or without gas.
On the picture, you can get a slight glimpse of the road, which leads higher up to the Cruz de Paramillos - 3000 m high view point of the cordillera. The road is called Camino de Caracol (snail road), and it needs at least a 2x4 car. Leave a Comment

Map of Mendoza's close Andes region by Trekki Whenever you have the possibility to visit Mendoza by car, or rent a car, you should do the "circle" around Mendoza - as this gives you a fantastic view of the Andes and brings you to all the hidden beauties of the area. The best is to drive north through Las Heras, then to Villavicencio ("home" of the natural water), then westwards along a gravel road which winds up high into the Precordillera. Along you pass a gigantic gorge, victim of earth's geological activity, some abandoned towns (mineries) - until you finally reach an altitude of approx. 3200 m - giving you a prime view of the mountain range. You drive down to Uspallata, can enjoy it's numerous restaurants and the specialities of the region and drive back to Mendoza via Ruta 7 (the connection between Santiago de Chile and Buenos Aires), passing the Potrerillos lake.
Please see the map - it shows the route Leave a Comment

Interior of Cafe on Av. Las Heras by Bwana_Brown As with every place we stayed in Argentina, there was no shortage of internet cafes in Mendoza. It seemed that there was something on offer on just about every block of the downtown area. We found this one only a couple of blocks from our hotel and located in the midst of an area of street cafes popular with the locals. In addition to the usual computers, it also had a 'locutorio' area of enclosed booths where you can make local and international phone calls while a meter shows your running tab. I used the phones a couple of times to confirm our next airline flights and also to check regarding our hotel pickup time for return to the airport. It was also great to be able to check emails from home on their computers and the cost was very reasonable. For both of us on-line for 45 minutes at separate computers the total cost was less than A$2 (US 70 cents). No waiting for a spare computer either. Leave a Comment
