If you are fond of outdoor sports, dont miss the chance to get close to a glacier. Bariloche offers plenty of opportunities.
From Pampa Linda, at the foot of Mt Tronador, which is 3554 m. high -one of the highest in Patagonia- take a 2-hour drive along route 258 to lake Mascardi, and from there through a debris road to Pampa Linda.
Have lunch, and then start hiking up through a trail in the forest to the Otto Meiling lodge, in 4 or 5 hs. The Meiling lodge, built 2000 meters above sea level, lies between two glaciers: Castaña Overa and Alerce, with a view of the 3 peaks of Mt Tronador. From the lodge, you may take an excursion on ice, with a professional guide of the AAGM, by resolution of the National Parks Administration.
I highly recommend the journey to C. Overa Glacier, which can be done even by beginners.
The ice walls, 1 km. wide, fall from the mountain peaks, and are originated by the melting of the river C. Overa. Its really worth being there!! :)
This outing starts at 9 a.m., together with your guide, you prepare all your equipment and start walking.
It is a 45 minutes' walk from the shelter to the glacier, and once there, your guide will help you put your crampons on. If you have never done it before, you will feel your feet strange, since you must walk with a wide step, raising you knees and lowering the center of gravity.
From the glacier you can see Pampa Linda on the valley, and the peaks of Mt Tronador.
As you walk through the ice, youll have to avoid blue crevasses following the instructions of your guide. Your ropes will be supported by very strong ice screws, each one with a capacity to support 800 kg.
Beginners are taken to easy slopes, with gradients around 65 degrees, while experienced people will be taken to more difficult ones (85 to 90 degrees).
You climb the surface of the glacier using the different techniques that the guides teach you.
When you arrive, they will be waiting for you with a cup of hot tea in the middle of the ice!
Equipment: Harness, long and short pickaxes for marching and climbing respectively, the helmet, gloves, rigid boots and crampons, ropes, and hooks.
Bariloche, Rio Negro
Among other mountains in Bariloche, this is a favourite... Trekking up to Laguna Ilon (lake Ilon) you can see the Tronador mountain towering behind you. Both mountains are fascinating and worth hiking.
Bear in mind that going up to Laguna Ilon is quite hard (as it is really very steep), but it s also a rather short way.
Subiendo a la laguna Ilon, se ve atras el cerro tronador. Ambas excursiones son fascinantes y valen la pena.
Eso si, tengan en cuenta que la subida a la laguna ilon es bastante empinada, pero relativamente corta.
To do this outing you must get equipped, listen to the safety talk given by the guides and then get into the river.
Adventure starts on the raft, always scorted by the safety kayak on the prow. At the beginning youll ride on rapids class II and by then youll have full adrenaline.
When you feel the river Manso roaring in the canyon, you feel the immensity of mother nature and observe the perfection of Patagonian Cypresses and all that abundant vegetation, notice a golden-breasted woodpecker, a huet-huet or maybe a chucao tapaculo.
The Velvet Canyon is the last peaceful place: as soon as you cross it, action starts. In this sector the river Manso becomes rough, since rafting combines rapids class II with violent white waters class IV.
Row unceasingly as you fall into a pool before the river gets into Chile.
The trip ends in Argentinian-Chilean territory, in the field of the Bahamonde family, a beautiful place with wide corrals, grain sheds and centenary houses made of larch tiles standing just as the day when they were built.
The final picture is the Andes with their snow covered peaks, the intense green of the forests, the roaring of the river Manso and the satisfaction of having come to the end of the journey full of joy and enchanted by nature.
The Manso is an ideal river for all those who wish to have fun in one of the most beautiful valleys of Nahuel Huapi National Park.
Equipment: It will be provided to you there.
In Bariloche you can do canyoning, a type of adventure tour combining hiking with climbing and swimming in pools, canyons and rapids, jumping from natural springboards to deep pools, crossing the river with your team, walking on the rocks, rappel climbing in cascades and plenty of adrenaline.
Once you get to the top of the cascade, you can start your descent. Surrounded by exhuberant vegetation, these natural pools invite you to plunge into the stream.
In the steepest sector you use ropes for rappel.
In less steep sites you let yourself be dragged by the water sitting on the polished rock of the jumps.
The milenary natural slides carved by the persistence of the water are ideal for this kind of adventure.
Drift with the stream among rocks of different colors.
Suddenly the waters get faster and there s an exciting toboggan at the end of this fun challenge. Seduced by canyoning?
Equipment: The necessary garment includes a helmet, a harness and a neoprene jacket, which can be hired from the operator.
For those who wish to go canyoning for the first time, they recommend the 45 m. high cascade in Arroyo de la Virgen called Salto del Vasco.
The most hot skii sites in South America are located near Bariloche and in Chile.
Equipment: No worries if you don't have your own,you can rent all you need.
Instructors are available as well, individual or small groups lessons, you can take it as package together with the hotel price(in Alaska hostel too..),sometimes,if it's a package, the hotel will provide you transportation to/from the skii site.
The Llao Llao Resort golf course is very scenic and fun to play. Views are incredible over the Nahuel Huapi lake. I recommend to combine lunch at the hotel with a round at this interesting course. The golf course is undergoing restoration on their greens which will be ready for play early in 2006. By the way, green fees in Argentina are very affordable so a golf tour in the Patagonia is a nice option.
Arelauquen Golf & C.C. is a new development with a nice golf course overlooking the Gutierrez lake and the Cathedral peak. The hotel and clubhouse are spectacular and worth a visit for lunch or dinner. Highly recommended.
