SALTA: THE WAY TO SAN ANTONIO DE LOS COBRES
In colonial times, transportation from nothwestern Argentina depend on pack trains, most of wich passed through the Quebrada de Humahuaca on the way to Potosì, but an alternative route crossed the rugged elevations of the Puna de Atacama to the Pacific and then continued to Lima.
For travelers across the Andes, the area around the bleak mining town of San Antonio de los Cobres must have seemed an oasis, though even as late as 1914 it had population below 1000.

If your are not alone, you can rent a car in Salta and take a day trip to San Antonio de los Cobres. It´s cheaper than taking the excursions and you are free to stop to do whatever you want: take pictures, visit some ruins, villages.
The road starts good but becomes terrible on the way. Nothing that an average driver can´t handle.
