If you visit the Shrine of the Difunta Correa you will see a lot of the locals making small offerings. Some of the gifts left are quite large or fancy. Please be respectful when entering the shrine. I bought a few bottles of water from the little stand just outside the shrine. That seems to the most common offering.

As you leave San Juan City and start going out into the countryside it is not unusual to see a lot of people in the countryside using horses instead. I remember the guide telling me that there were a lot of places that were very very remote that could only be reached on horseback.
You will wonder when you first see them because it looks so unusual...but the men wear thick leather chaps and their legs are protected by thick leather attachments to the saddles. This is to prevent injury if they are thrown off the horse. Remember, so much of the vegetation here has thorns instead of leaves due to the aridity....
