    Welsh Tea Houses

The biggest draw in Gaiman is having traditional afternoon tea at one of the historic homes in the downtown area. You are served hot tea and half dozen types of sweet breads and biscuits. They charged us 30 pesos per person, which is quite steep for tea and cake, although they didn't charge for our 10 year old son. And what you're paying for besides the tea dna food is the opportunity to experience this unique culture. The houses are all very old and are outfitted iwth original furnishings, many of which were brought over from Wales with the first immigrants as heirlooms.
There are 4 or 5 of these houses within a few blocks of each other . We chose Ty Nain and were pleased with the experience.

    Tourist Information

by TexasDave Written Mar 27, 2008

As you enter the town from Highway 25 you are on Sarmiento Street. One block over to the right is Belgrano St. Right next to the old Railroad Tunnel is the Visitor's Center where you can get a map of the town and suggestions about what can be seen.

If the idea of having even more sweets than you have during the typical Argentine breakfast, it's recommended that you avoid taking tea in this town.

Also, if you skip tea time, and come here, you won't run into those traveling around on tour buses....plus, it's sort of an interesting place to be....

    Canal

The main square is so big that it not only has monuments, plants and benches; the town hall building is inside the square, and an artificial canal runs through it.

La plaza principal es tan grande que no sólo tiene monumentos, plantas y bancos; el edificio de la Municipalidad está dentro de ella, y un canal artificial la atraviesa.

Camwy is a bilingual high school; the students learn Spanish and Welsh. The front door sign says: "Nid byd, byd heb wybodaeth", that as everybody well knows, means "Education is bread to the soul".

Camwy es una escuela secundaria bilingüe; los estudiantes aprenden en Español y en Galés. Sobre la puerta principal se lee: "Nid byd, byd heb wybodaeth", que como sabe todo el mundo, significa "La educación es el pan del alma".

    Church

There is only one Catholic church in Giaman: Nuestra Señora de Luján. There are many Protestant chapels all over the region; there were 36 in the past, not further than 10 Km one to the other; they were not only religious temples, but also schools and meeting places.

    First house

The first house of Gaiman was built in 1874; it was made of stone, and the roof made of straw and mud (nowadays it has a different roof). It is situated at a protected place (to avoid the eternal wind). There is a museum inside, but unfortunately it was closed when I visited it.

    Big wheel

An ancient big wheel can be seen at the main square canal; among the blue lilies and the willows, it composes a very attractive picture.

Una antigua noria se encuentra en el canal que atraviesa la plaza principal; entre los lirios azules y los sauces, compone un cuadro muy atractivo.

    Pyramid

Julio A. Roca Square is the main square of Gaiman, and it has a curious monument: a pyramid that commemorates the fourth centenary of the discovery of America. It was built in 1892 (obviusly!) and each one of the four sides has a caption in a different language: the North side in Spanish, the South one in Welsh, the East one in Italian and the West one in English.

    Me at the first house

The first house is quite small; it was built in a depression, so to come in people have to come down some rungs. Between you and me, I am very short, so I felt as a giant close to this house!

    Window

The museum situated inside the first house of Gaiman was closed that day; it exhibes typical Welsh stuff, brought by the immigrants. As I could not visit it, I took pictures from outside, like this lovely little window.
