Cordoba to Puerto Madryn
In one single journey, we left the heat of inland Argentina and travelled well over 1000km until we reached Puerto Madryn, a coastal town in Patagonia. Though we were well used to long bus journey's in Argentina, this 16 hour, long, overnight journey between Cordoba and Madryn seemed to last forever and it was some relief when we finally arrived. The scenery along the way featured mostly the flat, endless pampas, once again indicating to us just how huge and sprawling Argentina is.
Jorge Schmid Sea Tour
Punta Ballena embarque or getting around in Puerto Martyn, by boat or zodiac to have a closer look at the sea animals. Only a few captains are allowed to do this sea trip because the know exactly the behaviour of the whales and the weather conditions.
The embarquement of the ship itself is already spectacular, the look at the whales, so close to the boat breathtaking
Make a reservation on time - price about 60 pesos (16 euros) - duration of the trip : 90 minutes

TO/FROM PUERTO MADRYN BY PLANE
There aren't direct flights to Pto Madryn, you should fly to Trelew City airport (60 km) and then take a shuttle to Madryn with one hour of additional time trip.
Aerolineas Argentinas / Austral is the main airline with this destination, and the flight Buenos Aires / Trelew lasts 2 hours, the cost for a round trip is $500 (u$s 178).

TO/FROM PUERTO MADRYN BY BUS
You have several choices from Buenos Aires, but I recommend you the "Condor Estrella" bus company, departing from Retiro, the main Bus Station of Buenos Aires.
A modern fleet with a good service on board, like breakfast, DVD movies, toilette, etc.
It's a long trip from Buenos Aires (19 hours) but a comparative cheap transportation way.
$135 each ticket (u$s 40)

From Puerto Madryn to Puerto Piramides
Bus company Mar y Valle has regular connections between Puerto Madryn and Puerto Piramides. It leaves Puerto Madryn bus terminal at 8.55 am and Puerto Piramides at 5.00 pm. The ticket costs 10 pesos (one way). You can buy the entry ticket to the National Reserve at the Madryn bus terminal or in the bus, when entering the reserve.
Once in Puerto Piramides you can join some tourist group to see the peninsula (unless the mini-buses are full) and it will cost you 65 pesos.
There is no public transportation inside the peninsula! You can visit it with a tour or using your or rented car.
The closest airport to Puerto Madryn is Trelew (60 km away).
There are mini-buses going to the airport from Madryn about 2 hrs before every flight which would pick you up from your hotel. You can go to any tourist agency and ask for such service. It costs 13 pesos per person and you pay directly in the bus.
This is the cell number for the company that was picking us up: 472474.
Renting a car is a good way for travelling around Puerto Madryn. We've rented one to go to Punta Tombo. If it's 2 of you the price including petrol is about the same as buying the tour tickets and of course you are more flexible.
Just remember that half of the way to Punta Tombo (105 km one way) is a gravel road which doesn't allow to drive faster than 70 km/h and sometimes the road is so bad that you need to slow down to 30 km/h. It's not the easiest road but it's certainly a great adventure.
We've payed 162 pesos for the rent from Localiza and about 40 pesos for the petrol (400 km).
To get to Puerto Madryn from Buenos Aires you can either fly to Trelew (60 km from Puerto Madryn) or take a coach.
The trip by coach takes 19 hrs and costs 95 pesos. I think there are few companies operating this route but the one I used was Patagonica. The bus had "semi-cama" seats which open enough to make it comfortable and sleep all night long. You also get some baverages and snacks in the bus.
Although there are flights to Puerto Madryn you are probably better off saving money by catching a direct flight from Buenos Aires to Trelew which is less than an hour away (I think the flights to P.M. touch down first in Trelew anyway).
When you land your bags will be searched for any fresh fruit (!) which you can't bring in and then you are free to leave the airport. Try to be quick as there is a minibus which will drive to Puerto Madryn and is much cheaper than a taxi and will drop you to the door of your hotel.
If you are lucky, like I was, you will get to sit in one of the front seats and enjoy the view. As you can see from the picture the landscape is uniformly flat and barren - but what really takes your breath away is the sky. You have to see it to feel the earth's curve. Astounding.
The minibus will also take you back to the airport if you book a seat.
From Montevideo by bus
As we were making a student trip, the cost could not be very big; all the trip was as economical as it was possible, so we chose the bus; from Montevideo, whas a "little" ride: 27 hours later, we arrived to Puerto Madryn!
Puerto Madryn is situated 1470 Km far from Buenos Aires; there are regular bus lines; if you prefer something "shorter", you can take the plane (2-3 hours).
