This country is a steak lover's paradise. You really can't go wrong here. Try 'milanesa', a thin, breaded veal or beef steak (also sometimes available with chicken). Since the country is about 1/2 Italian ancestry, there is plenty of pasta available. Particularly popular is gnocchi, which they spell noquies (with the tilde). There is also a gelatinous type of dessert made a variety of things dulce de membrillo (quince), dulce de batata (sweet potato, my favorite), etc. that is usually eaten with a very mild cheese. And they eat everything with 'dulce de leche', a caramel like substance. Theme: Other

Argentines have simple breakfasts. They usually just grab a media-luna which is a sort of croissant or pan de leche which is a muffin with cream on top from the numerous lovely pastry shops. Leave a Comment Theme: Breakfast

Hailing from Italy, Milanesa de Carne is a thin-slice of beef, coated with beaten egg and bread crumbs and then, deep-fried. Sometimes, pieces of boneless chicken are used, which are then called Milanesa de Pollo. They are usually served with lemon wedges by the side. Leave a Comment Theme: Diner

Literally translated as 'Free Fork', Tenedor Libre is actually an eat-all-you-can buffet. More commonly found in Buenos Aires (near the centre) than other cities, it is an economical way to fill your stomach. Some are Chinese-run (with Argentinian version of Chinese food). If you have had too much beef, this is a good place to eat other types of food. I like the Tenedor Libre with Chinese food located on Avenida Corrientes 1255. It has good selection of Chinese food and Argentine 'bifes' and 'parrillas'. Great dessert buffet as well! Empanadas are crescent-shaped pastries filled with various ingredients, like cheese, meat, tuna, dulce de leche, onion, etc... then, fried or baked. A local favourite empanada is the humita which is empanada stuffed with cooked corn. Many franchises around Buenos Aires sell empanadas but a popular one is SOLO EMPANADA. Try the empanadas in Northern Argentina, they are different from those in Buenos Aires - spicier and more delicious! Great snack. Leave a Comment Theme: Local

Argentina is famous for its meat and meat is what you mostly get in traditional restaurants. I am a meat lover, so I enjoyed almost every meal in Argentina, even if I had somehow imagined it would be even better. Of course, we were to some eateries where food was crap, but I was surprised for the general good quality and variety of restaurants in Buenos Aires. Leave a Comment Theme: Local

Locro seems to be found more in Northern Argentina. It is a thick stew of maize, beans, beef, pumpkin and some herbs. Not too bad. Leave a Comment Theme: Local

The steak in Argentina is the best in the world and is relatively inexpensive. They ate dinner too late for me, so I normally had steak and a bottle of wine in a local cafe for dinner. The Cafes are often men's territory and smoke filled but the food is good, the service is fast and they always seem open for business. I found a bottle of wine was less expensive than a small bottle of water. . I can be pretty picky about wine, but I never had a bad house wine my entire stay! and what a great excuse to drink wine with every meal Leave a Comment Theme: LocalPrice: less than US$10 » Currency ConverterComparison: less expensive than average
