Ushua: Fireland : The last Bar ... Le dernier Cafe...

by Maillekeul

You can't miss this place if you go to the Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego : it's the only "bar/restaurant" here and it's a very nice place, though a little bit expensive (but, if you're hungry or thirsty, you will have no choice !). You will enjoy good coffee and tasty pastries, next to a heating that will remind you of grandpa and grandma... And... as Ushuaia is supposed to be the most southern city of the world... this is the last bar of the world !Vous pouvez pas louper cet endroit si vous allez au Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego : c'est le seul "bar/resto" du coin et c'est bien sympa, bien qu'un peu cher (mais on a pas le choix). Le cafe est excellent et le chauffage vous rappellera des soirees chez les grands-parents... Et comme Ushuaia est censee etre la ville la plus australe... c'est donc le dernier bar du monde !

DULCE DE LECHE

by swesn

Dulce de leche (Dool-say dey ley-chey) is heaven. Yes, it is. It is milk and sugar evaporated to a pale, soft caramel fudge thingie. It is brown, sticky and gorgeously sweet. Every other pastries and desserts, magnificently and lovingly prepared by the wondrous chefs of Argentina, has fillings of dulce de leche. Cartons of dulce de leche are sold everywhere and people had been known to finish up a carton of dulce de leche in one day. I have grown to love it too. If only I can import it into my country…Otherwise, try the recipe in the below website.

ALFAJOR

by swesn

Readily found in 'confiterias' (confectionaries) or 'kioscos' (kiosks), the alfajor must be the most typical of Argentinian's kiddie-snack.It is a maize-flour biscuit filled with dulce de leche or apricot jam. Sometimes, they are dunked in white or brown chocolate and individually wrapped. Too sweet for me.

DULCE DE BATATA, ZAPALLO

by swesn

Besides Dulce de Leche, there are also Dulce de Batata, Dulce de Zapallo, etc...These are sweets prepared from sweet potato (batata) and pumpkin (zapallo). One orders some slices of cheese and serve these dulces over.

Asado

by tini58de

Argentinians love their meat, and the Asado, or Argentinian barbeque, is the way they like it best - grilled on a huge spit over a pit full of red hot coals. If you are invited to an Asado or decide to eat in a Parilla (BBQ restaurant), bring your appetite because the food is served in large portions and consists entirely of sausages, steaks, ribs with just a few grilled peppers on the side. Many Parillas are all you can eat for a fixed price so it might be wise to eat lightly beforehand. In the southern parts of the country the Asado uses goat meat instead of beef.

Ahumadero Familia Weiss: A must restaurant in Bariloche

by hmoitta

Excellent food with smoked local products, cosy ambiance "ciervo" ( deer ) is excellent (don't worry because we eat the surplus population of deers. In the old times people brougth european deers to Argentina and they have reproduced too much)

Tip Photo
CHORIPAN

by swesn

Choripan is Chorizo + Pan. That is a roll with a chorizo (sausage) clasped inside. A recent phenomenon due to the crisis : people are taking their BBQ-pits out on the streets to whip up some choripan for sale, just to earn that extra cash.

HELADO (ICE CREAM)

by swesn

Ice-cream in Argentina is TERRIFIC. Many well-lit heladerias are located all over the city.My friend Francisca and I went to a very posh 'heladeria' in a very posh corner of Buenos Aires. The very posh price of the cone of ice-cream was 7 pesos. Gulp! As the master ice-cream scooper piled on the second scoop of ice-cream of the flavour 'dulce de leche' (but of course), he turned the ice-cream cone upside-down and proceeded to elongate the ice-cream. It was of such rich, thick texture, the ice-cream would not flop down and die. It merely grew in length. Then, Master-Ice-Cream-Scooper dipped the ice-cream cone into chocolate and placed it in a freezer for a few seconds to harden the chocolate. We were now looking at the tallest ice-cream cone I had ever laid my eyes on, all of 1-metre high. We wielded it like it was the light sabre. As we proceeded to eat it, WE stopped traffic as...

Cabana las Lilas: Good food, food factory mentality

by ibawaya

Every guide I read advised me to visit this restaurant, one of Buenos Aires' best. Reservations are a must, especially on weekends. Reserving the day before, we were still limited to 9:00 pm, a little early for Buenos Aires. The guides had commented on the meat, which is from the restaurant's own ranch. It was indeed good, and perfectly cooked. The prices were reasonable by US standards in Argentina's current economy. However, Cabana las Lilas was missing what I liked most in the other Buenos Aires restaurants in which I ate--warmth, friendliness and a leisurely pace. On being seated at our table we placed our orders and were immediately surrounded by young women pouring water, serving rolls, bringing the wine, etc. A lovely appetizer plate was served, part of the cover. Our salad came almost immediately, before we had finished our appetizers. Then, halfway through the salad, the steaks...
